I try not to engage with certain ideas by primarily shaming them, and I tend to not make arguments by appealing to demographics or identity, but I’m seeing a lot of white people on social media saying “I’m seeing a lot of white people on social media ____” and then offering up their explanation of the exceptionalism of what we’re seeing is appropriate, followed by an exhortation to “simply listen” to what the violence is telling us. I’m seeing strong black leadership from Atlanta pleading with people to not burn down their community. Then we’re seeing a celebration of white folks showing their solidarity by burning down black communities, or watching remotely and cheering in some sort of catharsis as those most victimized by these actions are the black communities themselves, and by people not even
from those communities.
