Off-season 2020 Conley Trade Ideas

Conley hasn't been a great fit. If the cap drops as expected, our FO will likely try to trade him. Here are some ideas just off the top of my head. Feel free to chime in, give constructive criticism or even ridicule me. It has been a while; I need that satisfying lashing from our favorite keyboard warriors.

Detroit: Conley for Snell
Pistons need a leader, and Conley fits with what they have. We dump salary ($20+ million) which allows us to keep Clarkson and do other things under the luxury. Maybe we can pry some 2nds away from them too but the cap savings are massive.

Charlotte: Conley for Batum & Monk (or picks)
Charlotte needs more good players however they can get them. Batum is almost done, but maybe Gobert can get a good season out of him. Monk is intriguing. He hasn't worked there, but does he just need better surroundings? If they won't send Monk, maybe they send us a protected pick, loads of 2nds, etc. Conley for Batum saves us $9 million which could be a big deal.

Charlotte: Conley for Rozier
Would have to include more pieces, but this is the main part. Hornets shed future cap space to set up a new franchise around Graham, Bridges, Washington, etc. We add a much needed perimeter defender who can play off the ball. We also shed 20-21 cap space so we can keep Clarkson.

Philadelphia: Conley & Ed Davis for Horford & Richardson
Sixers aren't heading in the right direction. Horford is a bad fit and contract for them. They need an offensive leader in the halfcourt. Conley's expiring is big for them. With this deal, we are a much better team with great depth regardless of salaries.

I'm sure there are more, but this is all I got just brainstorming on a Tuesday morning.

Fall I guess lol.

I thought about OPJ, but I don't see any reason why Chicago does that. Conley makes $8 million more while they already have Coby White to groom at PG with Satoransky as a backup.

I don't think we should give up any assets to dump Conley, and I think OPJ would take an asset or two.

Saw a bleacher report saying the jazz should trade Conley and Ed Davis and a second round pick to OKC for CP3.

I don’t know how many years are left on CP3, but with the emergence of SGA, and being able to use Conley as an expiring, would this be enough to land Paul?

the only way I see this working is if Paul has multiple years left.

I believe Mitchell and Paul are tight. This would please Mitchell a lot I believe.
 
Sometimes thing work, sometimes they don't, but Conley's regression this year has been sobering. It's not really the points, to me, it's the shooting percentage both from 2 and 3 which are basically career lows.

Not exactly a good return rate for $32M. Is he going to turn down $34M next year to chase a ring for someone? Not so sure, but you kind of hope he does.

I've contemplated a Conley move... its tough given the size of the contract. Philly for Horford and Richardson would make some sense on court imo. I don't buy that Horford is cooked. He played well with Embiid off the court. I wonder if Rudy and Al could work because Al can shoot well enough that you can space and he's a solid post player... so if teams go small he can actually post dudes up. It might fit better than with Embiid because Joel wants to be on the block...Rudy does not. He is essentially the super backup center that can anchor the defense and allow us to play 5 out.

Richardson is a great defender but seems to get hurt a lot. He's really help on the perimeter.

The issue is the money. Al goes too long and complicates other things... only really makes sense if we were forced to trade Rudy. Richardson likely opts out for a bigger deal (though not a guarantee with the health issues he's had) and we likely could not pay him. Add in the possibility of a shrinking cap and huge losses for the Miller's businesses and I'm not sure they can financially sustain this type of move.

If we did make a move with Conley I think Philly is a natural fit because they need someone that can create on ball, the fit with Simmons and Embiid would be good I think, and they need to shed some long term salary. As much as I love Tobias Harris I would not do Conley for Harris straight up. That contract is tough and I think he's basically as good as Bojan. Bojan is better off ball and I think Tobias is better on ball.

Other teams it would be mostly a salary dump maneuver and I'd likely just keep Conley. I wish we would have stuck to the plan of bringing him off the bench because I think he could excel there. Redundant with JC but a huge bench spark plug that can share the ball. Maybe find a pick and pop backup center he can run plays with.

Tobias is also quite a bit younger, a more-believable 4, a somewhat better defender, and a better playmaker (higher rate of assists per possession, higher percentage of assists while on the floor, and less than a season removed from being one of the best ball handling 4s in the PnR in the league). All of those things matter, especially if we're to finally embrace making Donovan our "1" and stop dragging our feet.

Bojan is playing out of his mind but I will be stunned if he is playing like this in two seasons. Of course this is not really on the table but I would pull the trigger and look at moving Bojan to shed salary.

Back to the more believable scenario (Conley + stuff for Horford + stuff): I would've done it earlier this season and I believe it could've happened. Having Horford already here gives the Jazz some security if they indeed decided to move Gobert, so I see some of that redundancy as a potential strength rather than a weakness.

Conley's going nowhere. He will definitely opt in on the money. We lose another season. He leaves for nothing.

I haven't run the numbers, but that would possibly get us under the cap, which could make us players in free agency, say, for Christian Wood.

On the flip side, the Pistons only substantive pitch to keep Wood is that they can pay him because they will be under the cap (they didn't have his Bird Rights).

I don't think we can get under the cap... under the tax far enough to use full MLE. I would say we get Wood in that deal as a sign and trade addition. Detroit makes a run at the 2015 playoffs with Mike Conley and Blake Griffin. Everyone wins!

I agree with most of this. He hasn't looked great in Philly this year so it kinda made me wonder if he's a guy that scores more on mediocre teams and we may not get the LAC version of Harris.

Although... seeing what we got out of Bojan I wonder if Quin could help Harris put it together more often. The dude is a worker so he may continue to improve.

We would get something closer to the LAC version since we have a more egalitarian system, could use his ballhandling/playmaking, and the lane is less clogged. Still think the fit would be Just about perfect.

Not really. 37.6% from 3 is pretty decent and a hair above his career average. His floater game went down the drain though

Kinda the best thing that could come from the playoff... that and Rudy and DM making up and looking like a duo that wants to stay together and play for each other.
