Game Thread Aug 03, 2020: Utah Jazz vs Los Angeles Lakers

Added to Calendar: 08-03-20

Niang and JC were bad. Like JC missed a ton of shots he normally makes. The offense was really moving the ball. Had a few shots gone in we were in business.

The refs were pretty ****ing atrocious. The touch fouls we got put us in a bind. Meanwhile Dwight was throwing dudes to the ground with no call. They reacted to AD just yelling every time there was a contested rebound. I’m also very confused on what a charge and block are anymore.

Good breakdown. We missed a bunch of "makeable" shots and the refs gave LA every advantage. I liked the effort. Mitchell looked fantastic but nobody else really did. Pretty good result considering we were playing one of the title favorites.

Rudy was great last night... AD went at him early and Rudy wasn’t having it. Don’t discount what he did.

Royce was also awesome last night and mike was really good. Our lack of length is shocking against this team. The hung in there admirably

Proud of our guys tonight, it was a valiant effort. We're just ill-prepared to face a team that lanky and athletic and Bogey doesn't really change that. Should have probably put a little more thought into putting this team together. Either that or we should start going after some hired guns for the playoffs like the big boys do.

The Lakers feature 3 consensus #1 draft picks in their rotation, because Los Angeles is a premier location. We don't have the location draw to recruit like they can. It doesn't men we won't ever win a title, but let's not pretend it's just a matter of "a little more thought".

Didnt watch the game, but holy **** another game of not being able to hit 3's. Jordan Clarkson continuing to be a complete ****-show who cant pass or hit shots.

I dont hate Conley personally he just doesn't wow me on the court. He looks like he doesn't really care too much.
Kind of going through the motions. Very smooth laid back dude.

We need power, aggression, and anger. This team is too soft.

and I can't stand Niang and Bradley in the rotation. These guys aren't championship material. They both should be ballin' in europe (and probably will be soon).

We have a beast in Brantley wasting away on the bench. Tucker could add some juice too.

Last time we had power, anger, and aggression at the PG position (DWill), we ran him out of town.

Conley was good last night and O'Neale was everywhere.

I simply do not believe Gobert played well at all. AD and Howard outplayed him. I know he's supposed to protect the paint, but last night was like playoff basketball when we needed Gobert to alter his play to shutdown one player instead of an area. I just thought last night was an average performance by Gobert.

When our team falters with Bradley, I don't think it's always because Gobert is so good which seems to be the pro-Gobert argument. I think it's because Bradley is so raw. Favors is a good NBA player. Not great, not all star and definitely not elite. Well, there is a big difference between Favors and Bradley just like there's a big difference between Favors and Gobert. Last year, we played worse with Favors than Gobert when Gobert went out, but not nearly as badly as this year when we have to go from Gobert to Bradley. The Ed Davis signing really screwed us.

GTFOH... I get it you ain’t his biggest fan... He was great last night. Handled AD 1 on 1 and limited him to mostly jumpers. Also helped us not get lit up even though we were given up like 6 inches at every position.

Be a little more objective.

I am objective, and I do appreciate Gobert. Last night was not a good game by him.

The Lakers had 58 points in the paint and his man scored 40+. One could argue that Gobert's man is going to get his because Gobert's main job is to protect the paint. Well, didn't protect the paint or guard his man well last night. The worst team in the league at allowing points in the paint is Atlanta at 53.6 ppg. We gave up almost 5 more points than the worst paint protecting team in the league.

Some people need to take their Gobert colored glasses off sometimes.

Some notes:

Mike Conley laid an absolute deuce on something like 7 or 8 possessions (defense and offense). And then was mediocre for more than a dozen others. It kills me how bad this trade has worked out He’s such a poor player on defense this year after showing out last year. I think it’s fair to conclude that there’s a significant Desire Problem.

In a short stint, I believe Morgan proved he deserved all of Niang’s minutes.

Bubble Clarkson is one of the worst players in the league.

Lakers won’t win the title.

Wtf, dude. Mike was really good? This might be the furthest apart from you I’ve ever been on an analysis of a game. Mike was was Replacement Player. His defense was super trash.

We didn’t just miss a lot of good looks in this game. We missed a lot of them very badly.

Also, we just can’t stop dribble drives. Missing Bojan obviously has nothing to do with this, because he’s below our own poor average in this facet. You don’t win any playoff series when you play like this. Conley is a sieve on-ball.

C'mon, Lakers often have two elite big man and a decent third at the same time on the floor, it makes his job very hard being given how small we are. Davis shot the 3 well and had plenty of free throws, he didn't dominate Rudy when they were one on one. Also I don't think it's fair to compare paint points allowed on average against ANY team with playing Lakers who always tend to dominate in the paint. I am pretty sure every team allows them to score more from that area than they do on average against others.

He gave up a couple layups on drives but I didn't think he was a big issue on defense. Their guards didn't do a ton against us.

He had an efficient/steady 24/8 and at times when I thought it could get bad he had some timely baskets. The offense was free flowing and I thought he had a lot to do with that. He's too small to be a plus defender at this point in his career. Overall I thought he was a big positive.

Our bench is so bad. Niang had one rebound and think of all the opportunities he had with Clarkson laying bricks. Free Ed Davis.

I understand all that. Somebody said Rudy played well. He didn't. His job is to be the best defender in the game of basketball. His influence on the game was hardly noticeable so I feel like he had an average game or worse.

This is the whole Gobert debate for me. Yes, he is talented. Yes, I like the guy. No, he's not elite. When we play the truly elite teams and players, he doesn't have the ability to take the game over on either end. Sure, if you gave him Pippen, Bruce Bowen and Kawhi as teammates he would shut down the paint even more, but that's not realistic. He's not a max or super max player in my mind because he can't dominate a game. Great teams and elite players can still isolate him out of the game.

That’s the emptiest stat line since Al Jefferdad.

Did you watch the ****ing game? Dead *** serious. AD got a ton in transition as did their other guys... most of that was with Rudy on the bench. They got lobs when Tony was in the game because Lebron gonna pick that **** apart.

When Rudy was on AD he got jumpers... worst thing he did was let him hit a couple threes... he's a 34% three point shooter and 95% of the teams in the league are going to live with him shooting contested threes. Rudy can get out and guard those, but he has midgets behind him so if he gets beat at all its over.

Rudy went for 16 on 6 shots. AD had 40+ but it wasn't super efficient when Rudy was on him. Its a pretty damn tough ask to have Rudy help on Lebron, guard AD and then fight an additional athletic 7 footer for rebounds. But sure we gave up points in the paint and AD got every ****ing call so Rudy was trash.

They were not forced either... wide *** open. Missed another layup around the rim too... it was contested but one he normally makes.

I think he needs to get laid. You know he's a ladies man so this must be hard for him.
