Xavier Tillman is just such a "oh we settled for ____"plain/vanilla/blah type of pick IMO, at 23 a la Grayson Allen... I truly believe utah should have its sights set higher... He doesn't warrant being selected that high... Especially like, lets see his combine numbers first(we wont get them I guess, the combine is gonna be scuffed this year... ), i cant stress this enough I cuz I bet those combine #'s would cause some second guessing around here... I dont think he's that athletic, at all, he's always looked rather anchored to the ground to me......

I know it sounds bizarre because its not the same position but look around in these playoffs... big strong 240lb forwards are getting the job done (not all the time but enough where mostly its viable), taking Tillman over Robert Woodard, I just dont see how it makes sense... Utah needs to be fishing for players who can possibly give them a few years of major performance (starter-quality) for cheap.. Tillman is not that guy, he's a Malik Rose type of solid-rotation guy..

I’m good with either guy but I think Tillman has some Draymond to him... kinda a Theis backup but different than what Rudy brings. I think he could play right away if we wanted to use MLE somewhere other than backup center. Vanilla is a great flavor sometimes.

I’d rather have Bey or Woodard... would love to find a way to swipe Tillman too.

In addition to using the pick here are three names to potentially bring in on a make good contract. All were high 2nd round picks in the year Spida and NWG were drafted: Tyler Dorsey 6'5" wing from Oregon currently playing in Israel with an NBA opt out. Had a decent season with Memphis a couple of years ago averaging over 9 points per game. Frank Mason III lead the GLeague in scoring. Ivan Rabb lead the GLeague in rebounding. Perhaps one or all could contribute to our puny bench. If our late 2nd round picks we are still clinging to are better great. If these guys are better we have improved the team.

Rabb is solid... Frank isn't much of a fit with our size issues.

I have seen Tyler Dorsey in person... if he is 6'5" its because he's wearing stilts. He has a slight frame and is much closer to 6'2"

Yahoo sports lists him at 6'5" as does the Oregon website where he played college ball. If he could put up almost ten a game for Memphis he does have some skills. All these guys have warts but some scouts thought enough of all three to select them must higher than NWG in the same draft.

Exums best skill was his ability to change directions. His crossover speed was insane. His fatal flaw was not being able to pull up off the dribble which really limited his move set in the nba.

And a lot of this was hindsight after he got drafted, not what he appeared to be from his potential.
 
Like, I think if you had Exum and Hampton side by side on draft day, you would say "They have a lot of the same weaknesses, but we saw Hampton struggle in a pro league vs Exum who we havent seen struggle. Exum has better physical tools besides vertical pop. The only big negative on Exum compared to Hampton is the shot form is more unorthodox, but the results are similar"

Also, if you go back and look through draft reports, I think Exum's defense was much higher rated than Hampton's.

Like if you look at Hampton's floor(according to this scout) (which I think we would all say Dante Exum only achieved his floor (and I'll also add Dante probably would have been better if it hadnt been for injuries, not saying a lot better)), he's basically Exum without the defense.

Add to that Exum was really able to bulk up and add size, which I'm not sure RJ will be able to do as well. Exum really was 1-3 switchable, and may eventually be 1-4 switchable. Hampton may strictly be a guard defender who struggles individually against bigger wings.

Exum without the defense huh? That sounds as appealing to me as a turd sandwich without the bread.

I get what you are saying and am just giving you a hard time.
 
RJ does sound like a fairly hard worker and he is working with Mike Miller so he knows what he needs to work on. I'm not sure Dante ever really had the mental makeup to be amazing. Don't think he is lazy just don't think he's driven.

I'd be fine with him... if he misses he's the right type of miss imo. I like high upside guys at positions of relative scarcity or guys you think can play a role early and have a touch of upside. I'm not great at projecting these guys and without college highlights or stats its an impossible task.

Well, I wouldn't call him a position of scarcity. He's a mid-sized combo guard, which might be the least scarce thing in the NBA.

He's got a decent amount of NBL games, so he's not really that hard to scout. We know what he currently about as well as we know what any guy who just played one year in the NCAA.

I was thinking of him more as a wing, which maybe its better to call them high-demand than scarce.

I just don't know how to compare a 18 year playing in a pro league against grown men against other guys playing in college basketball. We know more than we did about Dante but as a casual observer I'm not sure how to translate what he did over there.

I would likely have other guys in front of him but I'd understand the pick I guess.

He's basically the same size as Grayson Allen, so I would call him a guard.

6'4 in shoes with a 6'7 wingspan and a 8'4 standing reach w/ a sleight frame.

Allen had the exact same measurements with a 8'1 standing reach instead and more bulk (though he was older, I would expect Hampton to reach the 200'ish pound range eventually and maybe he has put on a inch here or there).
