Conley staying

Every time I look at roster construction possibilities I come to the same conclusion... its so much easier to figure out fit (cap and roster) without Mike. Not that what he does isn't valuable. If you are DL JZ and Ryan you have to ask yourself if he is part of the equation beyond this year. I assume you had the talks prior to him picking up his option about whether he'd use his termination option to sign a longer term deal... so we should know or have an idea how willing he is to stay.

If Phoenix does the CP deal I'd be more than willing to take Oubre and Ricky and send Mike. We don't have to play Ricky 30 minutes a night anymore... and our spacing with Bojan is already improved. Both guys get deflections and steals at a high rate... Oubre just shot 35% from 3 this year and is actually fairly good as a pick and roll ball handler. He's almost 25 so lines up super well with DM's age. He's a small bump in shooting percentage away from being like a super valuable young wing. I know he is expiring but I'm cool with a one year trial run. He gives us some wing variance we don't have. I think we could snake something more out of the deal but if not I'd do it as is.

It depends if DL will still get butt hurt and stop Quin from moving Conley to the bench like he did last season

Conley is a good bench scorer and a below average starter at this point of his career. What do you do with him as a coach? Not hard to figure it out.

If we are starting DM at the point then there is really no reason to keep JC unless your moving him up into more of a wing position which he is undersized for. Mike is too ball dominant and it would be no different than starting JC with DM.

This may very well be the jazz thinking if they can’t dump a salary to afford both JC and a mid level.

I personally think the deal with Tobias and assets is a no brainer if the jazz are willing to pay the tax. OPJ is a good deal too.

Completely disagree. Mike Conley isn’t on Mitchell’s level. We need to make sure he has all the touches he needs. Put Conley and JC together and it will work. We can have 5 ball dominant players on the second unit for all I care. There’s enough to go around to have two ball dominant players at Mike’s and JC’s levels.

Conley is not a below average starter. He struggled to pick up the offense and was learning to coexist with Mitchell which caused him to struggle with his shot. He did eventually figure it out. The one problem is that having two guards on the small side hurts the overall team defense. It’s not that Conley is a below average starter.

If it is true that OKC does not want Ricky or Oubre (but specifically Ricky's salary) and we don't operate as the third team in the CP deal then we deserve to suck.

Some have made a lot of excuses for Mike... new system, not healthy, new role... the issue is that he was supposed to be the perfect fit and he is flat out not the guy we thought he was. He ate up a bad defensive team in Denver and got somewhat hot for 10 games in Feb/Mar - Is that the guy we get all year? Nope! The thing about aging is there are always a nagging injury. So when he goes cold again we will make excuses for him and say his foot or ankle hurt... just wait Mountain MIKE is coming. Maybe he shows up for 10-15 games again... and then the following year he bounces.

Just cut your losses now and move him if something solid appears... similar to the move above. Mike is in the way... his contract makes it hard to maneuver this year, his presence makes the lineups harder to figure out. JC is better at the bench scorer role and honestly I think Ricky taking his spot in the starting lineup might be a net positive.

I completely agree, if you can move him, do it. I’m just not ready to say he’s as bad as the other guy said he was and we need to keep him relevant if we intend to get a decent return if the jazz are able to trade him. Best way to do that is start him but give the bulk of his minutes with the second unit. He can coexist with CJ.

I think Oubre has more value than that, but I'd take Ricky back in a heartbeat. Not because he fits this team a lot better now than he did, but our vivint commercial game needs, nay, DESERVES his contributions.

".......meow." Nuff said.

Curry, Harden, Luka, CP3, Westbrook, Murray, Trade Young, Kemba, Morant, Brogdon, Fox, Ben Simmons, Lowry, Irving, Lillard, Vanvleet, Jrue, Bledsoe, Ricky, Dragic. Here are about 20 starting PGs in this league. Tell me where would you rank Conley. If he is about 15th on your list that makes him an "average" starter. If he is near the bottom, he's a "below average" starter which is where I would put him

I wasn't the biggest Rubio fan towards the end of his stint here but I'd take him back in a heartbeat. He was a decent defender, he could occasionally get hot but most of all I think he was the glue guy. This team completely lacked any sort of chemistry last year and it just felt that there was no true leader. Rubio may drive me nuts at times but this is what he brings.

I don’t care where you rank him he’s not a bad starter.

I like Mike, but I’d trade him in a heartbeat and cut our losses. Try to get somebody who will contribute beyond just this next season.

Tobias Harris would be my first target, but I could easily get onboard with snagging Rubio and Oubre.

then again. Curry, Harden, Luka, CP3, Westbrook, Murray, Trade Young, Kemba, Morant, Brogdon, Fox, Ben Simmons, Lowry, Irving, Lillard, Vanvleet, Jrue, Bledsoe, Ricky, Dragic. Just tell me who how you rate Conley over any of these guys. he's around 17-18th on this list of starting PGs, that makes him a below average starter in a 30 team league. not hard

I don’t concern myself with player ranking. He’s skilled and capable of getting the better of any player on any given night. He’s no scrub, not even close.

If this is how you rate a players value then you don’t understand basketball at all.

except i never called him a scrub? all i said was that Conley's a good bench player and a below average starter. would you call jeff teague or george hill scrubs? what about derrick rose or rajon rondo? they can still contribute at a high level, but as role players. conley is a role player just like these guys.
