Lets assume we can get under the tax by trading one of the players in question... lets assume the luxury tax payout is 5-6M. Between the tax and the payout it will put between 6-7M in your pocket to duck the tax by offloading one of those players... you are Ryan Smith... what do you do?

I didn’t see the OPJ option.
Too many people would pick that kind of an out... and I just don't think its even in the prereferral vision of the front office.

Even if we release Morgan today, we're still over the tax unless Udoka singed at less than 120%. You would need to trade two of the four listed to get under and I don't see that happening.

If it is as simple as trading one of those three I would be shocked if we didn’t to get under the tax.

We will see if Ryan Smith has deep pockets to go over
Jazz have some promising young talent they need to keep in the pipeline
Let's hope Smith will be like Mark Cuban and do what ever it takes

It doesn't look like it. We're ~$1.9 M over the luxury tax as it stands including all four. None of them make more than $1.9 so unless there's something we don't know about Doke's contract, we're still over.

I think Capulator has Udoka signing less than 120%... no idea if it is correct. Assume it is and that trading one guy gets us under the tax. Waiving them would leave the prorated salary on the books... trading them for nothing would take it all off midseason I believe. Then you do a 10-day dance to duck the tax.

There will be a mid season trade where we send out Udoka and two second round picks in exchange for the draft rights to Nick Emery.

Looks like there is a $1M difference between capulator and sportrac on Rudy’s deal. There is a $1M incentive to make the all star team that seems to make the difference.

Prolly trust spotrac I guess. Guess I should have added the OP Jr. option.

I wonder if a player can waive his incentives like he can waive a trade bonus? Gobert has $2M tied up in incentives. If he's allowed to waive it, that could easily be added onto his next deal.

It just feels like we are too close to ducking the tax to actually pay it. Kinda needed to squeeze Favs and JC to do it simply...

I guess we don't know incentives on their contracts. It wouldn't surprise me if Clarkson and/or Favors had 1-2M tied to incentives that we don't know about. Agents will always report the highest number to the media.

Could the Jazz say trade two of the players for the rights to Justian Jessup who is playing at least one or two years in Australia so the trade would dump about 3.6 million and take back zero for cap purposes?

My head is so spun around by this tax problem. It’s frustrating to not be able to know the precise dollar figures. If it were true that we could get under by trading one of those players, then I’d bet we would do it. I think most people would want Niang to walk the plank first, but I doubt the FO is thinking that way.

Bleh.

Pay the tax.
