Too much scheming and not enough athleticism or talent?

It seems as if the Jazz rely too much on schemes to play their best basketball, and not enough on pure athleticism and talent (probably because they’re lacking in it). They have great offensive schemes, and great defensive schemes. But when teams throw wrenches into those schemes, the Jazz don’t have that pure talent and athleticism 1-on-1 game to adapt and overcome. And obviously this looks true on both ends of the court right now.

You know how we might rag on teams like the Wolves or Knicks or Rockets even that are overflowing with all this talent and athleticism but lack in leadership or experience or toughness or solid coaching or management... What if the Jazz are overflowing with experience and great coaching schemes, but simply don’t have enough talent or athleticism to compete at the highest of levels?

In some ways I think the moderate success of the Jazz has been its worst enemy.

No they us viewed as "steady-state" by the FO. Moderate success is exactly what they want. Always being "on the cusp" keeps fans excited and the organization solvent.

Why would they put themselves in the luxury tax if they wanted to always be on the cusp? I think the FO simply got starry-eyed like we all did with Mitchell in that first year, and decided against doing a full rebuild, including moving Rudy who doesn’t exactly fit Don’s timeline. Their consistently late lottery picks has made it difficult to find younger, supertalented athletes to complement the main pieces. First year and the bubble feel like fools’ gold.

The Jazz just aren’t that close to the cusp imo - I don’t think Donovan is a #1 on a championship team, and I don’t think Rudy is a #2 on a championship team, and again their rotation is aging. If they found a way to pick up someone better than either DM or RG (lol - hard I know especially given they’re already over the cap and it’s SLC) - they could be superb. Kinda feels like they’ve screwed themselves unless they’re prepared to move some pieces. They’ll have to get under the tax this season anyway. I almost wish they would tank for this draft class but there’s absolutely zero chance of that.

We need to play some “do ****” players... players that do more **** than just shoot and score. We have one on the bench... we are at like a 5 possession difference between our turnovers and the turnovers we cause... that’s a tough deficit. So if we don’t have a good shooting night we don’t overcome that deficit.

We also have two offensive players that are playing well below what they are capable of so we shouldn’t be too worried. DM and Bojan had many wide open threes last night and they just aren’t falling. It’s frustrating.

As time passes the more i realize most of the basketball forum posts i see across the interwebs can be filed under 2 categories;

-Unnecessarily blaming the coach for everything

-Unfounded/Unwarranted praise for the backups or 3rd stringers

For some strange reason lots of people have lots of energy to dedicate to these things... It's not just here, it's ubiquitous on all the forums i frequent.

You know the saying for a struggling football team....

"The most popular player is the backup quarterback"

If you take the first half or the Nets game and 2nd half of last night's game we lose by 60. Bradley, Green, Davis, Exum and NWG are gone. Who do we blame this on?

Honestly its mostly Bojan and DM if you ask me... they have sucked thus far.

nah not u specifically.. but to directly answer your question; too much focus on what the coach and his schemes or rotations arent accomplishing and not enough on what the players arent accomplishing.

When Mike Conley is out there making a fortune and getting outplayed pretty much across the board by Elfrid Payton who makes as little as any starter in the league, that is on Conley not the coach....

To me the QS blame is misplaced, if he's to blame for things its for giving his ok on asinine deals like the one given to Conley... and for a draft pick such as Grayson Allen...

CONLEY and the front office! I dont come here to trash talk him everyday but If u actually look at that game last night he got whooped by elfrid payton and deserves to get called out for it.

BB, DM, QS, DL, and the list goes on.

But to me, primarily DM, then QS, then DL, in that order. Bojan needs to get better but he gets a minor pass for surgery and missing a lot of time. It isn't easy to pick it back up. But he is still responsible.

Having either one of Darius Bazley/Kelson Johnson/Brandon Clarke would have made me feel so much better about this team right now. Wonder what it took for these teams to get these guys

You forgot to mention the people who blame our starting point guard for our struggles because of a single bad game when he has otherwise been our best offensive player by far this season.
