What's new

Last good song you listened to?

This live performance was executed quite well:

So I heard this song recently, then realized it came out in ‘95. Sounds vaguely familiar and I think it may have gotten some playtime on Q99. I wish I could get a playlist of mid-90s Q99 and hear all the songs I’ve forgotten about that haven’t persisted into the 2000s.

ETA the singer looks like Dave Portnoy.

I did forum search on this band’s name and they didn’t come up. If this nearly decade-old track with 141 million views is new to you then you’re welcome. You only get one ‘first time’ and even if the rest of your day is as routine as routine gets, you’ll remember this.

It is also fun to search YouTube for ‘BABYMETAL reaction’ to find posted reaction videos from people watching the above video for the first time as they try to figure out what is it they’re watching.

BABYMETAL did the above song on Colbert a couple years ago but it is best to find videos of theirs of live performances in Japan where they pack stadiums full of fans who are so tuned in that they’re practically part of the band.

When this track was released, overly processed glam metal ruled. In the following weeks, Bon Jovi would release “Slippery When Wet”. It is 1986. Alice in Chains, Pearl Jam, and Nirvana weren’t even bands. I’m not saying the Seattle bands weren’t great when they later hit the scene because they were. It is that the supposed Seattle sound of a dirtier, grungier, anti-glam pushback against the 80’s was happening with or without Seattle.

There is a remastered version of this recording that gets rid of the hiss, does a better job of balancing the levels, corrects the vocal reverb, and sounds cleaner. It sounds better, and it sounds worse because it sounds better. The dirty lack of professional detail was the whole point. The remastering even leaves in the sound of the recording equipment spooling up and the captured banter of the band before they start playing, but it has all been cleaned. That is like colorizing the black and white opening scenes in the 1939 Wizard of Oz where Dorothy is in Kansas.

I like the worse and way better original recording. This is grunge from Los Angeles almost half a decade before grunge was a thing.
Concrete Blonde – Still in Hollywood

That is outstanding. Thanks for the share!
If you haven't heard it, she covered Talking Heads' entire Remain In Light album. It's phenomenal, especially since that album was so influenced by afro-beat anyway, and then to bring it back around and have it be redone by the queen of afro-beat...

I'll be sure to check it out.

That drummer is crazy good. Every beat felt perfect. Nice find.

I've got a drum-centric piece for you. After 26 years, Swedish band Kent decided to call it quits. Most bands will have their PR firm issue a statement or the band sends out a tweet. That is not what Kent did. They made this piece of performance art that I totally dig.

The various women being rounded up by death, the running dogs, plane, the locations, and tiger were from their album covers. The name of the track translates to "Then as now for all time". I wasn’t a fan while Kent were active, I can’t think of another band that ended their career with a statement piece quite like guys in Kent did.

Kent - Då Som Nu För Alltid

This is EXACTLY the thing that got me into them, too!
