2021 NBA Draft Preview (new thread)

His nickname is Bones... he either has to be skinny or ironically fat. So he needs to keep that in mind as he attempts to fill out his body.

I like him mostly because you compared him to Bane and he has a cool nickname.
He's definitely a great fit offensively next to Mitchell. Defensively less so. I think he's a guy who isn't going to be able to guard a lot of people all that well. He's going to be too upright to stay in front of lead guards on-ball and he's going to get killed by screens on and off ball. He gets compared to Quickley because of body type + shooting, but Quickly was a more engaged and active defender in college.

I also dont know if he has the ball-handling to be a reliable secondary playmaker. I'd be higher on him if I was more confident in his defense or ability to expand his playmaking.

I'd be fine with him at 30 though.

Not as excited about the draft this year. I think we end up moving the pick on draft night and swapping it for a second and something. After last year having multiple guys I really liked... and very obvious directions we could have gone... and then to do with Udoka... I'm just not gonna get caught up in the hysteria this year. It'll be a fun night again...
This draft is way better for the Jazz than it was last year imo.

Trae doesn't have issues. The Curry's have excelled. Not like Jordan Clarkson is jacked.

If the Bones kid is a lights out shooter and can do it off the dribble, I'm not as worried about his physique as much as I would have been 10 years ago.
Yeah, and Trae and Curry would both be better players if you gave them donovan mitchell's body. Generational shooting ability, passing, and ball-handling can overcome a lack luster body.

And Jordan Clarkson crumbles with physicality and can't draw a foul to save his life...

And Bones Hyland isn't as talented as any of these guys so the comparison is mind boggling.

How do we know how good the kid will or won't be? He's bigger than Lou Williams who has had a fine NBA career.

I'd love for him to be bigger, stronger, faster, but if the kid can hoop, let's not pass on him due to something as silly as his frame or weight. There have been plenty of good players, especially in the last 10 years, who don't fit the prototypical height and weight model.

I don't know what to expect from this kid, but I think he's worth a look: https://therookiewire.usatoday.com/2021/06/24/bones-hyland-scrimmage-game-nba-draft-combine/

Ok man, you can continue to be a moron if you wish.

I never once said to pass on him solely because of his weight/size. I said it's not a positive. I look at draft prospect holistically. I don't make **** up and sugar coat things just because Trae Young is also skinny it means all skinny players are now good and it wont be a huge obstacle.

Yeah, because that's what I said.....

I know you are still kinda of raw from be so incredibly wrong in the last couple years, but quit taking out your hostility on me.

I'm 100% behind Josh Primo. He should be the pick if he's there at #30. I would even trade up a few spots to get him if that's possible. He's gonna be a player.

And to top it all off, Bones Hyland weighs about 10 lbs less than Trae Young at the time of their combines, and that's with Bones having significantly more length and total body area.

To top that off, he isn't even that great of an athlete. He has very little explosion despite weighing 170 lbs. His weight is very outlier for his size. His body comps would be dudes like Justin Holiday and Will Barton, both of which are better athletes and were able to get their weights in the low 180s.

IDK... the way the draft shook out last year we had a lot of ways we could have gone assuming we stayed at #23:

We had upside wings available in Hampton and McDaniels
Ready made guys like Bane and Tillman that can give you something now and grow into stuff later
Quality PG prospects like Pritchard, Flynn, Terry
Basic big wings like Bey and Woodard

No idea why DL had to have Udoka... there were a lot smarter ways to go. I have wondered where Udoka lands in the draft if we don't take him. He's a better prospect than Bradley but it seems to me that whatever model DL and the front office uses is skewed heavily towards these types of guys.

Last year's draft made me question if the Jazz would have been better off keeping Bradley and trading the pick for a future pick. Whoever was making decisions last year ended up with interesting results.

I just looked up the Desmond Bane trade... Boston traded Kanter (to get off his salary) and the #30 for two future seconds... that's not great work by them.

So now we know what our former GM and future GM did in last year's draft.

This year's draft is much deeper than last year's, imo. The fact that the Jazz are looking at talent like Roko, Vrenz, Boston, Murphy and Petrusev at #30 is pretty rare. Plus, there are so many guards in this draft that some good ones are going to drop to the 2nd round.

Trading up should be an option this year especially with the Knicks, Rockets, and Thunder having 3 first-round picks each.

I mean, none of those guys are huge misses for the Jazz. Maybe McDaniels/Hampton/Bane explode one day, but none of the other guys are really going to be misses we talk about 4 years from now.

Guys like Jaden Springer and Josh Christopher might be available at 30. That's pretty insane and both fit what the Jazz need out of a backcourt mate for Mitchell (in lieu of being able to grab a high level lead ball handler).

And I'm still holding out of hope for Elijah Hughes as Dennis Lindsey last masterstroke.

I'm making a bold prediction. I think this Josh Primo kid is going to be one of the best shooting guards in the entire league. He's a bit of an unknown because he played behind a bunch of wings at Alabama. I think he's the youngest player in the draft. He doesn't turn 19 until December. He has the widest hands of any guard in the draft. He's still growing.
