2021 NBA Draft Preview (new thread)

I have 2 questions for this train of thought:

#1 - are we considered to be "running it back" if we dump Favors and an asset for a 2nd rounder?

#2 - do we fear any sort of backlash from the team if we just dump Favors? Or even worse if we use an asset to dump Favors?
Yes and yes.

Part of the issue/benefit of Favs is he is really well liked. If you overpay him and have to move him later it will ruffle some feathers.

I'm not big on draft promises... but if Jared Butler wanted to be here I'd make him a promise and then tell his agent to withhold showing his medicals to other teams. I think teams tend to over-react to that stuff and there is opportunity there. MP jr. , malcolm Brogdon are some that immediately come to mind as guys with medical red flags that slipped in the draft. This is obviously different as it isn't a foot or knee or back.
Agreed.

I know as much about Miles McBride as KOC's write-up on him and I'm over the moon. Anyone wanna comment (@Saint Cy of JFC )?
He'd be on my bottom half of the combo guard rankings. I'd put him in the same tier as Hyland/Grimes/Ayayi. He's basically built like a lesser version of pre-draft Donovan Mitchell. Doesn't have the outlier length (but has good length). Doesnt have the outlier athleticism (but has good athleticism). He's one of the more versatile combo guards in the draft, mostly average at everything with just enough size to switch between guarding either guard spot.

But overall I dont think there is a ton of separation between the tiers of combo guards. It wouldnt shock me if Miles McBride ends up being a good starter and I think he fits next to Mitchell.

I think the Jazz are going to be very active in the 2nd round. There are way too many prospects there that make sense.

Vrenz, Weiskamp, Petrusev, Johnson, Jones, Wright, Watford, Lewis...
I do think there's a chance that they'll be active. But at most I'm thinking either:

-buy/somehow trade for a second-rounder to supplement #30
-trade #30 for two second rounders

I can't see them going with any more than that unless they know Conley's gone without any decent compensation. Otherwise I think the Jazz will be too focused on title hopes to put that much effort into player development. The only player I see who has any shot to both be selected after the mid 30s and help the Jazz this coming year is Herb Jones (if he somehow magically figures out how to be something of an offensive threat).

I’d be on board for that, but if he’s fully cleared I would expect him to show his medicals to anyone in the hope of going as high as possible.

Doing a deal like this also allows you to split the baby a little bit... get a higher upside guy like Primo/Josh Christopher/Brandon Boston and a play now guy like Robinson-Earl or Herb Jones.
That would be my ideal scenario (other than Cade sliding to 30th), preferably with one (combo) guard and one wing.

Yeah. It would be too risky to do that unless his agent had absolute trust in our promise. Unless he goes in the lotto there isn't a lot of salary difference in the 30s. So its more about the situation. He'd have to like the potential situation here. I doubt he'd do it. I also doubt he slide past Denver (they need guard help with Jamal out). He'd be a guy I'd trade up a couple spots for if we had an opportunity.

I haven't been very invested in this draft, but I'm definitely on board with Jared Butler. Saw him play a few times over the past couple of seasons and he can really play. I think he's a better prospect than Davion Mitchell who's getting a lot of buzz at #7...but I think he did get a green room invite so #30 is not happening.

That's my draft hot take is that Butler is better than Davion.

I think Denver and Philly would take him if he slid to the 20s. He's a good analytics prospect, so Philly makes sense... Denver needs help at the guard spot until Murray gets back and he can toggle between both positions. They also are likely less afraid of the medical stuff with Butler since they have had success with Porter Jr.

Butler in Denver would make me really sad.

Jazz need to call Tillman Fertita directly and offer him $5M and #30 to move up to #24 and swipe Butler before those other teams can get him. Don't call the GM... call Tillman directly... his favorite prospect is cash considerations.

I think OKC likely has hopes of trading into the top 4 of the draft, but if they can't move either into the top 4 or package 16/18 for a top 10 pick that they would definitely want a draft and stash guy somewhere. If that is the case I could see them using 34/36 to make sure they get Roko... that's likely the absolute best we can hope for on draft night... that is still kinda reasonable imo.
