Jazz Offseason Plan

We have a long way to go before we have to worry about stretching Favors.

See what Mike wants.

See what other teams do.

Find a team that wants/needs Favors. One will exist, and we shouldn't have to sacrifice an asset.
We need to just be opportunistic with Favs... if there is something great at the draft then go for it. In FA a team will miss out and a spot may come open for him. Charlotte, Sacramento, NY, whatever team can't find good uses for their space.

I agree 100%.

I just don't want to do some cost cutting move like we did last year only to find out later that we were in the luxury any way. We have time to consider cost saving deals.

I don't want to pull another Ed Davis fiasco.

Is there any chance the Jazz can stretch Favors under the agreement that he waives his player option? That way Favors can go out and sign another long-term contract while making the 9 million he is owed this year over the next 3 years (I think that's how it works).

Jazz do it to save money without giving up assets. Favors does it because that way he has more control over where he plays next season. As long as he can sign a 2 year 10 million dollar deal, he will make the same total money over the next 3 years.

You could. He’d have to have a team locked in obviously already. I probably wouldn’t go that route. I’d want the contract so I can eithe go get a different player with it or if we use it in an uneven trade where we are trading him into someone’s space we would open up a decent sized trade exception. Most of them go unused but if you got to the trade deadline and things were looking great it might be the item that lands you a PJ Tucker type player and make the dollars work.
I think Cy's idea is a terrific fallback, especially if a dude falls to #30 that would be unlikely to fall any further (say, Butler).

I was just looking around at some salary information. Somebody please clarify for me if they can.

According to Basketball Insiders, which has some pretty solid financial information, it says the NBA fiscal year ends 8/1/2021 prior to the moratorium. https://www.basketballinsiders.com/utah-jazz-team-salary/ "8/1/21 — Final Day of 2020-21 season"

If that's true, could we avoid the luxury all together for the 20-21 season if we made the right trade prior to August 1? So could we trade Favors for less contracts coming back and avoid the luxury? If so, wouldn't that give us a greener light next season to spend on this "last run" since we wouldn't have to worry about the repeater tax?

I didn't know if this season was unique due to the condensed schedule, COVID, etc.

Thanks in advance

No... the numbers for luxury tax purposes freeze at some point. They take a snapshot.

If we wanted Hayward back, I would just offer Favors and Bojan to Charlotte. They may be able to get out of Bojan what they're wanting out of Hayward, plus if they have any use for Favors. In any case, this saves them the last year on Hayward's deal but also breaks this up into more movable pieces, if needed, because his contract probably gets harder to move as time goes forward and if they're ready to pivot. I don't see them getting a ton of value in return for his contract if they decide to move it.

I wish Hayward hadn't left here the way he did. He'd be great for what we need and this deal is possible. Just don't see how we do it with our history.

Understandably a lot of fans disagree but I would take Hayward back in a heartbeat. Even after the injury he's still athletic enough and good enough defensively to really help us, not to mention his ball handling and playmaking would be a huge upgrade over Bogey. The only thing Bogey is really better at is 3 point shooting and even that's not by a huge margin, Hayward shot 41.5% last year and 38% the previous season. The only thing that would concern me a little is his durability.

I'm over it. Not over it in terms of him doing something douche, I'll always think that. More over it in the sense that it's an "all hands on deck" situation and we've come this far and we have to make this work now. In that sense I'm willing to jettison sentimentality or, in this case, kinda the opposite. We just need to get better. I think he'd add an element for us and it would help with his rebounding. When he was put at the 4 in Boston he actually rebounding reasonably well (for him) and it would be a huge upgrade over Bojan in that regard. It would also help that he's familiar with us and Quin is familiar with him, so we don't get this whole season of talking about how he just needs to get used to Quin's machine.

It's like you said with Ainge. Ainge can say **** it to crap like the feel goods of a Favors return. Ainge would make a move to win and not a move for feel goods. This is a win move. I don't care about the feel goods. It will feel great when we hoist the Larry O'Brien.

I just hope it means we get a players trib piece called "Unfinished Business".

Not sure if anyone saw this yet but I'd be on board with 2 of these.

It's nice to see trade ideas that make sense for more than just one team. Even if the teams wouldn't actually do them, it's clear the author has tried to produce win/win situations.

Ben Anderson with an interesting take here — thinks moving Bogey is MORE likely if Conley STAYS. I had always thought in terms of a trade being more likely if Conley left, because we’d need to acquire a PG. Ben seems to think Ingles would play PG and we’d need to keep Bogey for his scoring.

The thought of Ingles as our primary PG seems disastrous to me, but what do I know?
