Jazz Offseason Plan

No way would they have to stretch Sato. He's a useful player on an expiring deal.
They could dump him to another cap space team but it would have to be NY or OKC... maybe someone has a trade exception. His contract this year is only $5M guaranteed so if they waive and stretch it the cap hit is like 1.6M instead of $10M. A team like OKC or NY may do it for nothing... they also might give them a second rounder. If not they could just waive the $5M and stretch the remaining amount to clear space for Lonzo or whoever.

I like him... he's useful... I agree. They just might need that space for someone else. Maybe the Lonzo Ball stuff is just a double sign and trade with Lauri.

The more I think about it the more I think the Lonzo deal is a sign and trade with Lauri and they operate over the cap... keep Theis' cap hold on the books. Otherwise I am not sure why they swapped Gafford for Theis last year. Teams do weird **** though so who knows.

Sato is only guaranteed for $5 million or they pay him $10 million to play.

Maybe they do Sato for Favors if they are just thinking about dumping Sato.

Doubt they are considering that though.

They only waive and stretch Sato if they need to clear cap space.

They only have around $100 million in contracts so they are a minor deal away from max space. I doubt they dump Sato.

They have like 12M in space then... Max is like $30M... so they'd near to clear like $20M in salary.

That assumes they waive the capholds for everyone including lauri and Theis. So I bet they try and get Lonzo (the guy they have been rumored to love) with a Lauri sign and trade and operate over the cap.

If they want to clear space Sato is gone one way or another... likely Aminu too. I doubt the dump him unless they decide to operate as a cap space team.

You're right. I ran the numbers wrong.

Chicago has to do some contract shedding to go after Lonzo or try to do a sign and trade.

Depended on the opponent. I have seen our defense work just fine in the playoffs and I have seen our defense struggle in the playoffs. Just like basically every team. Teams in the playoffs are better so even great defenses will struggle at times in the playoffs. There are some really good offensive teams that typically make the playoffs.
Memphis was said to have a great defense.... Until they ran into the jazz. Same thing with the clippers. I would have loved to see the bucks try to stop the jazz offense. I don't think they could.

What are your thoughts about how good our defensive has been in the 3rd round of the playoffs?

Don's not here for the Quin slander.

I don’t advocate firing Quin and I think he gets a lot of credit for our success. But there are a couple things that have to be acknowledged and addressed and if we aren’t nuanced with it, we’re creating a blind spot that puts us at reasonably high risk of repeating the same problems. Think DL. A year ago you wouldn’t have had the open narrative about him that you now have, and it’s not that DL is horrible — it’s that he had a couple blind spots that everyone dug their heels in on explaining away and now he’s tweeting from a burner outside Waco.

Yeah and now we’re all gaslit with “oh yeah, it was so obvious, everyone knew.” Well, maybe not to that extent, but you get the idea. Same thing will happen with Quin. The “lolz teir professionels u dumb” last up until they get fired. Or at least until they become consultants.

The offseason is just getting underway, but as of right now:
** The Suns could lose Chris Paul in free agency.
** The Clippers will be without Kawhi for the regular season next year.
** The Nuggets will be without Jamal Murray likely for half the season.
** The Lakers need to be retooled and Lebron is only getting older.
** The Warriors could re-emerge, but Klay is coming off of two missed seasons.
** We can handle Portland.

If the Jazz can get their act together, they could be the #1 seed in the WC again next year.

A good read:

"The summer of the sign and trade"

The Jazz floating a rumor about Joe Ingles and Bojan Bogdanovic may be intended to stir up some sign-and-trade options during free agency.

Realistic guys I have my eye on in free agency to add to the toughness factor of our team. I want guys who are going to play with the heart necessary to get us over the hump:

Free agents:

PJ Tucker - probably not possible, but I'd love having him.
Theis - stretch 5 hustle guy. If we trade/dump Favors, I want him.
Olynyk - if not Theis, get Olynyk.
Patty Mills - another all heart guy. Would love him off the bench.
Caruso - probably impossible, but would try to get him.
Ntilikina - pure hustle, great defense, awful offense. We could make a long term role for him.

Trade targets:

Rozier - he plays with that fire that we need.
Nance - hustle, heart guy. Solid player.
John Collins - budding superstar so probably impossible, but I like the edge he plays with.

I'm sure there are more, but these are the guys I would target.

I’m not big on Tucker for us, but really like the rest of this list. I’d add Neto and McConnell as other backup PGs I’d like.

What about a S&T mike (~20) to NY for Toppin
In the event he wants to walk and NY is preferable
