Has anyone flown out of Provo?

Aside from Fletch, of course. My wife and I are going to do a quick overnight in Phoenix and it will be easy to slip away because probably not hoards of people. Apparently the long-term parking is right by the terminal and is $6/day. It’s Allegiant Air and I’ve heard nothing but bad things about them, but whatevs. I was looking at their flights and see you can fly non-stop from Provo to Tampa area for about $116 round trip. The catch on that is they don’t run flights every day, so you would have to travel a Wednesday to a Wednesday (I usually like to travel on one day and then come home on the 7th day, like Wednesday to Tuesday). But thinking about if we went to Florida or did a couple days at Disney World, it’d be hard to pass on not having to deal with SL International (new airport sucks, by the way) and fly non-stop because we’ve got 5 kids. Dealing with the security nightmare, layovers, and connecting flights with that kind of a group sucks.

So, for those who have been to Provo, what’s it like? I’m assuming security is quick.
 
And a follow up question: I know that since my wife and I are vaccinated we dont need to get the negative covid test but what about my 5 year old who will be traveling with us? Does she need a negative test. Will be going to seattle from SLC soon.

I can’t comment on Provo airport, but I imagine it’s pretty effortless as it’s so small. I have flown Allegiant before.

Yeah, they nickel and dime you on everything as the low price is the hook, but you can beat them at their own game through smart planning. Packing efficiently is critical - either get everyone on to carry-ons that cost less by rolling those clothes up and stuffing extra into your ‘personal item’ (backpack that can be smashed under a seat) or stuff as much as you can into a 28”/30” suitcase to minimize the amount of bags you need. As for seats, only pay extra if you have someone so young that they need to sit by someone. Otherwise, tell the little bastards to look at their phone or Switches for four hours and no whining.

That said, if your flight isn’t particularly full, kindness to the gate attendant goes a long way. Ask them after you get through security if they have some open seats together and they will usually be nice and acquiesce as they’re used to people being douche bags and welcome someone treating them like a person. Worked for me twice on Allegiant flights. I’ve also heard that the old Vegas sandwich upgrade trick of giving them $20 will also make them play ball, but have never needed to do this.

In terms of the plane ride, just like anything else really. Pack some snacks into each carry-on and get some water post-security. Take your own bottles and fill them for free is what we typically do.

As for the new SLC, I hate the walk times but the airport looks fantastic. Too bad it’s the only feasible option for most destinations.

You shouldn’t need any proof for anyone in the family. Having a negative COVID test and proof of such is only for people flying back into the continental US from out of country. Interstate travel requires no proof.
 
People complaining about the SLC airport obviously don't deal with the living burning hell that is LAX very much. SLC is a dream.
 
So we flew out Saturday morning and came back Sunday morning. Overall reasonably painless. Our flight left at 11:12 and we left home about 9:35-ish. Got through security in about 3 minutes. But they've only got one gate so we sat down and waited until we boarded and it was pretty packed just sitting there. They get you on the plane early and then just sat there, then for whatever reason didn't end up pushing back until 15-20 minutes after departure time so it felt like a little too long. The Mesa airport is much bigger than Provo but still small, so we got our rental car immediately, then the next morning left our hotel at 5:30 am for a 6:40 am flight and were able to return rental car and have plenty of time. I'd heard the seats are crammed on Allegiant but they were just as crammed as any other airline. No wifi or entertainment on board. The seats don't recline and, while they're not necessarily comfortable, they're not any more uncomfortable than any other airline. Overall would do again if it has a flight to my destination. Will be interesting to see what happens when the airport expansion is done (I think some time next year) and if Allegiant will have more flights, or if any other airlines will have flights there. I found the website of some airline that claimed they fly out of both Ogden and Provo but when you search their flights there are none. I forget what their name was, but I'm curious why they have that listed on their website (and I'd never heard of them).

It's a comparison of the old SL International with the new one. They should have kept the old one and just expanded, as they apparently have plenty of space. Or just build that stupid *** terminal that they built and let Delta fly out of that and let the rest of the airlines use the old airport. They ruined a good thing. And I can no longer tell people, "hey, that's the gate Jim Carrey ran out of on Dumb and Dumber." The new one is a hot pile of ****. It seems like the only addition is a bunch of dumb retail. Everyone who says how awesome it is is always referring to dumbass retail. I fly to get to my location, not to go to a shopping mall.

I don't think I've used the new one then. I can see your point though.

I can say that out of maybe 30 different airports I've flown through, maybe 20 in the US and another 10-12 internationally, LAX is in the top 3 worst, and right now has a comfortable lead as the worst, straight up.

It's called Avelo Airlines. I believe they only fly to Burbank and it's only a few times a week.

Basically an Allegiant lookalike where if you pass wind, you'll need to pay $20.

Yeah, that’s them. I would actually prefer Burbank. However, their website listed no flights between now and May. Hopefully that returns with expansion. Do you know when they were last flying there?
 
Ah never mind. I see one flight in November so far. That's the next one.

Their service starts Sept. 17th. Perhaps their flight calendar will be update soon as I get the same issue of no flights being available. They only have five planes in their entire fleet so it's definitely a matter of getting lucky.

A wow. They seem to fly to a lot of places for only having five planes. I wonder how many employees. One jet going out of service and their whole thing collapses.

My guess is their fleet will expand a bit, but yeah, if you only fly to an airport 1x a week or less, you can stretch yourself a lot more.

Yeah and even the Burbank flights are hit or miss. They are going to find that they don't get enough traffic on that route for sure. I was going to fly my parents into Burbank because it promised to be cheap but they keep changing the flight schedules and we can't make it work.

I caught up on this piece of the thread and want to add I have seen flights listed but then they go away or the entire thing goes blank. I wonder if they will ever get it going for real.

At first I read this as you were going to fly to your parents in Burbank and was thinking traffic must be really bad to want to do LAX to Burbank.

Possibly canceling due to low capacity. Always a risk with these types.

Sometimes...

We once flew my parents into LAX from SLC, and due to various LA ******** the drive from Redlands to LAX took longer then their flight.
