Inflatable Kayaks

The Thriller

Anyone here have any? I was hoping to get something easy to transport, hike with, and use this summer. I don’t plan on going down any rapids. Mostly just to hang out with and maybe fish with. I’ve been checking this out.

$125 seems like an iffy price to pay for something that you're going to count on to keep you and your stuff on top of the water.

For novelty use, go for it. For anything beyond that, especially if you're going to be out on your own? Do serious research into the product and make sure it's quality and is reliable for your intended use.

I’ve seen ads for foldable kayaks. There seem to be several companies. These seem more affordable than many foldables…

When I open this thread my on-screen ads turns into ads for kayaks.

I’m looking at some others from REI. I can definitely pony up for something a little more expensive and reliable. I also don’t want to spend a fortune for a hard shell kayak. I don’t want to make it an all day project to hook that up to the roof of the car or trailer and store when done.

If you're just fishing, an inflatable kayak would work just fine. Any hard shell kayak is going to be harder to pack and store and they take up a lot of room at home and some people just don't have the roof rack for it.. Just be super cautious if you're pulling it up on rocky shores and have a decent inflator like this one:

My advice would simply be to get it and if you have issues, easy Amazon return. It's $125 - even if it goes kaput in a year, you're not going to be destitute.

My wife bought one a year or two ago. She likes it. I don’t know much about kayaks. Certainly easier to move around. We don’t fish. Just for casually moving across ponds and for the kids.

I’m definitely not looking to go over rapids or do anything too crazy. Enjoy some lakes, mostly up in the Uintas. Maybe do some fishing. That’s it.

Fishing hook goes into inflatable kayak. Kayak sinks into bottom of river.

So many people fish on/in inflatables. They arent made of the same material as balloons or something silly. I have an inflatable boat. Its VERY hard to pop with a fishing hook. They are made to withstand sharp rocks and sticks and fishing hooks as the manufacturers know their products are going to be used in lakes and rivers rather than backyard swimming pools.

A high quality kayak that will last (and have good resale value) are an investment. AIRE and Sea Eagle are the baseline. The NRS family of brands makes sweet boats that will take on rivers.

Here is an example of a good baseline package:

I'm a fan of AIRE for their inflatables, but have migrated to hard shells myself.

Make sure to have a good PFD too.
