Trade Rumors Involving the Jazz

Jazz could potentially have 3 lotto picks in the 2023 draft if they were able to trade DM to NY Knicks. They would demand the Detroit and Washington 2023 unprotected picks and a couple future picks along with a couple of young players like Toppan or Quickly or RJ or Grimes (2 out of 4 of those players or just one if more picks are involved). Jazz could easily miss the playoffs next year and be in the lottery. With a little luck they could have a solid foundation for a future championship team.

The pistons and wizards picks are heavily protected

Only problem with this is those picks aren’t unprotected from Detroit and Washington.

Neither Detroit's or Washington's picks are unprotected. Knicks can't force those teams to unprotect those picks.

Some people have the position that an all star is a top tier talent. Donovan mitchell made the all star team. Is he top tier talent?
DM is a fringe all star. Last one in each year. He does ONE thing good. And he isn't even very efficient at that one thing. He does several things bad. Very bad. Not someone who is going to lead you to a championship. Go get a haul for him DA. Or, we wallow in mediocrity.

...and then he's going to leave anyway.

People think tanks last a decade… what leads teams to being ****** for 10 years is not tanking when it’s obviously something they should do. Absorb the process fully and you will be good in 2-3 years if you have some luck… 3-4 years if you aren’t particularly lucky… maybe less.
It could last a decade. No way to really know. Not sure how long it took minnesota or the kings to make the playoffs (probably others im missing too) but a team can definitely suck for a long long time.

The other thing about bottoming out is that you can rent your cap space to hoard picks and you can end up in a situation where a max cap slot is always near while developing premier talent. This hoard of assets allows the team to continue to build beyond the team becoming good because you can use it replenish the talent pipeline or use in trades for those final pieces.

Those benefits are mutually exclusive to this notion of retooling. You get the hoard being bad and strategic or you just don’t and then every move has to be perfect (or lucky, more likely).
Another thing purposefully rebuilding/tanking allows you to do is take big swings on prospects.

Hell the jazz had favors (#3), Burks (#12), kanter (#3), trey burke (not sure but I think like #9), hayward (cant remember but might have been lottery), dante exum (#4 or #5 cant remember)
Lots and lots of busts available in the lottery. And forget busts. Lots of not even close to stars available in the lottery.
But also all of those players taken later in the draft? You can get more of those later picks by being bad on purpose as well.
