Trade Rumors Involving the Jazz

DM is a fringe all star. Last one in each year. He does ONE thing good. And he isn't even very efficient at that one thing. He does several things bad. Very bad. Not someone who is going to lead you to a championship. Go get a haul for him DA. Or, we wallow in mediocrity.

He is nowhere near the last one in each year lol.

But also all of those players taken later in the draft? You can get more of those later picks by being bad on purpose as well.
Huh? I dont understand what you are saying here.

No, I think that has been true. I think he has squeaked into the all star team. And if everyone was always healthy (AD, Kawhi, etc) he probably wouldn't have made an all star team yet. I dont think he has made any all nba teams yet (could be wrong about that)

Players come from somewhere and almost always the draft. It stands to reason that if you have busts in the lottery then there are good players that are later selections.

When you are rebuilding on purpose, you can have excess cap space that you can rent to teams trying to get off contracts by extracting draft picks. These picks being in the 20’s can yield players, but getting more bites at the apple is better facilitated by embracing the rebuilding process.

Hell the jazz had favors (#3), Burks (#12), kanter (#3), trey burke (not sure but I think like #9), hayward (cant remember but might have been lottery), dante exum (#4 or #5 cant remember)
Lots and lots of busts available in the lottery. And forget busts. Lots of not even close to stars available in the lottery.
Of course, you have to draft well. If the Jazz had just kept their two picks and drafted Giannas and Gobert instead of Trey Burke, how different would the team be. We selected Trey Lyles over Booker. Lottery picks are only as good as the draft is or as good as the picks that are selected. Some drafts just suck or are overrated. Plus, you cannot plan for a player getting injured like Exum or Parker. However, for a small market the draft is the best way to get star players. Once drafted Lebron James would never consider Utah during free agency. If we keep DM then we will be stuck in mediocrity for years.

Im looking at that jazz rebuild and trying to find the good players. later selections or right at the beginning. Im having a hard time finding any. I agree that more bites at the apple is better. But there are examples when all the bites have worms in em. (how many draft picks have the kings and t wolves used in the last 15 years and how many brought them some playoff wins?)

Can be, but I’d say that it’s about the hits more than the misses in a rebuilding context especially. The more apples get you more chances at hits even/especially if there are a lot of wormy/mealy apples.

The Jazz the last few years put themselves in a position where it was more about the misses than the hits: they couldn’t afford to miss and then they missed most of the time.

Btw. im down with the tank. Im down with trading DM for picks. Just playing devils advocate a bit and presenting some evidence.

You are 100% correct that more chances is more likely to hit eventually. But there example of teams (kings and t wolves) that had like a million apples and never had any without worms.
Its like I could sit down at a slot machine and you could tell me "the more money you put in, the better chance you have of hitting a big jackpot" and you would be right. But I might sit there all night and put my life saving in there and simply leave broke and suicidal.
