Jazz and Knicks discussing Donovan Mitchell trade per Shams Charania and Tony Jones

This gets said all the time, but $40 MM is a lot of money to just pay someone to go away. Does this mean that the going rate for an unprotected pick is $20MM and solid role players? I get it, no one would want him to play for us, but that's just a ton of money to pay someone not to play.
A 2027 unprotected pick is different than any random unprotected current pick

Especially with the uphill battle LA has. Lebron and AD won't be there or won't be what they are now... they have very little draft upside because of other deals. They might be signing Kyrie next offseason and being married to that circus. That pick has at least a 50% shot at being a lotto pick imo. Also just having the certainty of it conveying makes it a better trade asset as well.

Some intel on RJ's deal... it is 4/107M but can grow to 4/120M if he makes the all-star team, all defense, or all-nba teams. Either he's a useful but inefficient two way wing making 27M a year (when the cap is growing to like 170M) or he is an all-star wing making $30M a year. I don't want to hear about it being a bad contract.
Damn, that's a pretty nice deal.

I don't think so.
No because we are worried that he would be dealt in a Russ trade to Indiana.

Yes, THT has been on the block, but the KD news means they are more willing to move on with a Russ trade, which means they could be trading multiple players. Jazz secured THT.

THat is a much more reasonable explanation than a "down payment".

One of the many reasons I gave for us doing the down payment was in part to throw a wrinkle into the potential Indiana deal... Indiana wanting to throw Theis in there and get THT... blocking that or a potential 1 for 1 deal is all supporting down payment theory.

Basically down payment theory is a deal is basically agreed to. We are doing it in two parts... If we don't step in they might have already done the deal with Indiana.

Let it play out.
