Lakers-Jazz Trade

Watching that video, he gives off very strong Boris Diaw vibes.

Every time I see him, his body type and play style reminds me of someone. . . but I couldn’t place who. Finally figured it out tonight.

He reminds me of a shorter, younger version of Boris Diaw. Shooting mechanics, handle, attacking the basket, etc. . . all very reminiscent of Boris. He doesn’t have the defensive presence or court vision that Boris did, but the stats are comparable (outside of assists.)

I’m still underwhelmed by the trade, but clearly the Jazz like him. He’s been singled out in interviews by both DA and JZ recently. I’m hoping they see something I don’t.
Diaw? I mean I guess, a little. Of course you have to mean young Diaw with the Spurs and not the older, fatter version that comes to mind with the Jazz. I just don't remember Diaw ever finishing a two handed back to the basket alley-oop or slashing and finishing at the rim like this guy. Honestly I've been watching the NBA for a very long time and I've never seen anyone save for maybe Dr J contort himself around the other side of the rim and flip it in like it's nothing. Yeah, he's not super explosive like a Dr. J, but he is strong, fully ambidextrous with extremely long arms and able to finish in traffic. I think with his skill and durability, he'll be a pleasant surprise for Jazz fans, particularly if he decides to turn on the jets on defense like he's shown he's capable in flashes.

This. Would’ve LOVED to see what his value would be at now if the Jazz had executed the Mitchell trade first and still had Beverley, Beasley, Bogey, Conley and Clarkson to investigate additional trades now. I think a package of Beverley, Beasley and Bogey would look nice and clean for the Lakers books. Instead, they got the guy they wanted without having to put him in the bigger desk for Westbrook and picks.
I think there's something to the notion that Danny was trying to disrupt the market and best-position the Jazz for the real prize(s) from the Lakers (maybe THT is a piece that heads to the Pacers, downpayment theory [dead, but maybe it played marginal significance in decision-making that it might keep the vibes warm or some such crap).

I refuse to believe that it is as simple as that Danny all of a sudden right then wanted to make that deal because he liked the returning players.

I think you're discounting the possibility (likelihood?) that if THT didn't move to Utah, the Pacers would have gone ahead and sent the Turner/Hield to LA for their picks and THT/Westbrook. Then there would be no deal at all for us to even dream about. And if, by chance, the Lakers didn't make that trade, they would still have been wanting to move off the THT money in anything they would have contemplated with us. Beverley, Beasley and Bogey would work nicely for Westbrook, but if they're not getting off THT, then maybe they don't make the Westbrook trade anyway.

No guarantees, of course, but maybe this was the Jazz's thinking? But I don't think that it's a clear-cut thing at all that we would have been in a better position had we not made the Bev/TNT trade.

Wait and see. But i wonder if we keep 2 or our 3 vets, how bad we will be? 2 good vets + Sexton +Lauri + Fontecchio may not be that bad. MAybe Danny is right about the tank.

We have to consolidate our roster spots at some point before the season begins. A Westbrook deal makes the most sense from a flexibility and roster standpoint, but we could also deal a few players into other team's TPEs for a second or two and call it good.

That team is probably still 12th in the West at best ahead of only the Spurs, Rockets, and Thunder.

I like THT more than most here, but he's extremely right handed in his finishing (to the point that he has to regularly come up with acrobatic right handed reverse layups where a left handed finish would have been much easier).
I don’t know, it might appear that way with all the backhanded reverse righty layups but I think it’s more a wrinkle like that Ingles look away that makes him such an effective finisher at the rim. I mean it’s not like he’s pro right handed, he has a very good handle switching hands and will finish uncontested layups lefty when he chooses. Watching his assortment of moves makes me realize that he may be the 6th man replacement for Clarkson next year if we go that route.

It mostly just depends on what our true intentions are concerning the tank IMO. Athletically and depth wise, discounting age and experience, I see this as a deeper, more dynamic roster than last year’s.

It depends on who we keep I guess, will our roster be deeper? Sure. But the top end talent on our roster will be significantly worse than it has been for the past few seasons. Rudy was a top 15 player, Donovan was a top 30 player, and Quinn was one of the best coaches in the league. It's important to have good role players but star talent is what separates teams in the NBA and we went from having two top 30 players to our best player being a fringe top 100 guy.

Outside of Sexton, Lauri, and Vanderbilt we probably won't really have anyone on our roster that has been a consistent NBA rotational player.

I disagree with that. Team is also about chemistry and collective effort. Memphis is good not because of Ja ( he is a factor plus) but they still good without him ( 21-7 last year when he did not play) and they do not have top talent players, good one like JJJ or Bane but not top 30. But they fight and defend well each game.

Memphis built that chemistry keeping their coach and core together for 3 seasons. I'd be shocked if we have the same level of chemistry with a group of players that has never played together and a rookie head coach.

Ja is also a pretty great leader. If Donovan or Rudy were as good of leaders as Ja I think our chemistry changes.

I still hope we do a Westbrook trade and get at least one of LA picks. I can't believe that LA front office is really going to continue Westbrook's experiment after it failed so spectacularly. They are just posturing like we did with "we're going to build around Donovan".

Zach Lowe brought this up in his latest podcast. If the Lakers let every single player go and traded their 1st next year the most cap space they’d have is 35M or so. That isn’t even enough to get a 30% max player. So you’re banking on someone like Kyrie to go there for less than what he can get somewhere else then you have to fill out the entire rest of the roster with minimums.

Take some ****ing salary back and build an actual team that can compete.

There's always the possibility for a S&T

Which is exactly why they should want some salary back. If they only have Lebron and AD doing a sign and trade is a no go. They should do like Mike, Bogey, Beasley, Gay for 1 pick and a swap… then you sign and trade using Conley/Beasley so you can actually meet the salary demands of Kyrie.

Lakers front office is pretty dumb imo. They are surprisingly shallow so it wouldn’t surprise me if they don’t see the more obvious path to getting Kyrie if that is their end game.
