Lauri Markkanen Hype & Appreciation Thread

If he does not win MIP he will be in the conversation imo.
Marky is going to be a perennial allstar.
I still think he has another big step to go. He has proven he is a good player but he is still not what he should be. Hopefully he can keep figuring himself out and how to be elite in the NBA, he has all the tools to do it though. But he will be an all-star this year and hopefully more going forward.

Lauri is perfectly capable of putting up a 50/15 line if we ran our offense through him like the other 29 teams in this league do with their stars.

I'm happy we dont.

I don't think Lauri has the skills to create offense (for himself and others) at that frequency.
I've been really impressed with his cutting in particular, and the number of spots on the court he can score from effectively.

It is amazing how poor the bulls coaching staffs were when it comes to developing Lauri. He showed so much potential his first 2 years and then gradually turned him into a passive afterthought his last couple years. Wendell Carter and Lauri should have been one of the best front courts in the nba but ended up being trade bait instead.

He makes me think a bit of Detlef Schrempf, but with much better athleticism and better rebounding, generally better defense, and overall potential. If he can get to the same level of play-making as Schrempf, who had a couple of seasons at over 5 assists per game and was an excellent passer for a big man, that will be something. Here is a comparison of Lauri this season to one of Detlef's best seasons one where he was an all-star. Not far off. But I think Lauri has way more potential, and should eclipse this within a few years. I imagine when Lauri is 28-32 years old we will be talking about much higher comparisons that this, but this is a really good starting point.

Nice comp. That 3 point percentage of Schrempf jumped out at me. Especially for that era. Then I looked at the volume lol.

I meant 50 points and 15 boards. He is not a playmaker. But if you think he cannot create that much offense for himself, you are wrong.

Likely wont be proven wrong in this system unless we get ravaged by injuries and he has to carry the team. But just read the comments and check the shot chart in this national team game (where the entire game ran through him):

That is in 32 minutes, against an opponent ranked higher than his team by FIBA.

Most NBA teams has better defense to cover up some of shots he took in the Euroasket, but on the other hand, NBA has more room inside the arc for drives, and rules that favor offense. So if Lauri starts in some point of his career gettin 20+ shots a game, he might hit 35-50 pts games. His career high as for now is still 35. But how he is gonna build that 40 points game if and when it comes, might be different from how he did it in Euros. It will be consisting of drives and threes and occasional mid-range. There might be little less self-created shots than in his Euro 40 pts game, but thats ok, too. We havent still seen him go for lots of self-created 3pt shots like in the Euros, and tahts a lot bc of NBA defense is quicker and it might lead into turnovers - if Lauri keeps improving his footwork and handles as he seems to have done last summer, tht might change as well. If he now first-hand makes into ASG, the biggest change we will see, his FT attempts are going to get higher. We know how the NA treats strs. It is not great for the game itself imo, but as for Lauristan like me, I will take it, if it starts happening.

You are reading my mind. I was just about to post the same comparison. In this era Schrempf would have put up huge numbers with his skillset.

Gianniis 80% within 3ft. Markannen is 88%. Even surrounded by shooters that is elite inside game. Pair that with his other skills..the dude just has it. And all others teams just ignored what he could do. I feel we struck gold.

My point was he can create his offense. Doesnt need to be spoonfed. One of the main themes in Hawks forums after this game was that they had no one who could cover Lauri both outside and inside due to the combination of his shot, speed and length. John Collins was on him most of the night and got blasted, but they didnt see who could have done better.

And it wasnt the first opponent we have faced, where the fans felt they had no one in their roster to stop him.

Both Giannis and Luka have told you scoring in Eurobasket is tougher than NBA because of less space and different rules. Just take their word it.

yep, he might get snubbed on the allstar game tbh, this season. Really, despite his obvious improvement, unless the Jazz continue the winning for the next couple months which won't be easy although deserving of it, he could easily get passed over. Maybe fans can vote him in.

Saw an interesting video of Markkanen, where the guy said he scored 1.2 points per possession on iso plays in the Eurobasket (and he had a lot of iso plays there).

Went to check NBA stats and he ranks 4th in NBA on points per iso at 1.39, behind Haliburton, De'Andre Hunter and Dame.

I dont want us to play iso a lot, but in tie games with slow last possession, we could use it as a sucker punch.

Here's the vid:

Don't kill me here... but with all the talk of Danny being optimistic... and Lauri going bonkers and seemingly being a great fit on many teams trying to contend... what does Danny do if say Miami, Toronto, or Phoenix come in and offer 3 unprotected picks for Lauri? Miami was the team I could see actually doing it...

Danny has been zigging and zagging and surprising everyone... what if he really sells high on a bunch of these guys?

For the record... i think Lauri is more real than fluke. Some of his finishing will settle down a bit but overall I think this is close to who he is/can be and not some weird fluke. So not sure you are selling high per se... just that you bought low.

At this time seems Lauri should be untouchable
Unprotected picks from Miami will be in the 25-30 range
Jazz will not get anyone comparable to Lauri's talent with those picks

Just like how Minnesota’s pick was going to be in the 25-30 range this year?
