Fed Ex Carrier chucks computer monitor

I thought I heard there was a note on the gate that said, "Dear Fedex, throw that **** over the gate. Thanks."

The really funny thing is everyone acting like this is an isolated occurrence.

I'm sure their service will improve once the Postal Service ceases to exist. The government providing a fair priced alternative just makes FedEx provide crappier service...

You're out of character.

You were supposed to spin this as rich jerks inside their private gates deserving what the poor Fed Ex driver gave to them for killing his sick grandmother.

Yes. Everything the government does sucks. We need the responsible free market private sector to deliver all mail like this....

When I think of private sector, I always think of accountability...

One thing that's funny is that fedex is reportedly "investigating" this issue.

Really? You get a clear picture of the man. Just check the delivery schedule and fire this dude already.

Well, it's not just FedEx. Today I saw a clip of a UPS driver flipping off a customer and then hurling the package onto the porch. UPS declined to comment stating they had not yet seen the video. Really? After it's all over the news and internet?

These actions are inexcusable, but I understand the stress these men are going through. The hours and work during the holidays are horrendous, but what is up with the chucking? I work retail, 14hr work day on black friday....just got to tough it out.

For all we know, the home owner could have an attack dog that has charged the driver before. For all we know, the home owner has stood on his porch and thrown out racial slurs every day for the last month. For all we know, the homeowner has "tricked" this guy into coming inside the gate, only to find a water balloon full of spunk waiting for him. For all we know, there could be a pile of pillows just off camera and a sign that says, "Just toss packages over -- thanks!"

Bottom line, stop making stupid remarks like, "You get a clear picture of the man. Just check the delivery schedule and fire this dude already." because you don't know what the **** you're talking about. As usual.

Did anyone see the similar video of a UPS driver? He didn't treat the package quite as poorly, but he flipped off the camera for good measure. Stellar year for package delivery apparently.

Still does not excuse the guy willfully doing damage to someone else's property. If those are the issues then just leave the thing outside the gate and run away. Or refuse to deliver there and report it to the boss. I know that sometimes UPS will only send call tags to some homes for issues like that. Or do what most lazy delivery guys do and pretend they weren't home and that you left a notice that must have gotten "lost".

Well, like I said, we don't know if he was "willfully doing damage to someone else's property" -- that was the point I was trying to make. Is it likely? Ya, it sure seems that way. Even if he did do it on purpose, we don't know why he did it. Not trying to justify his actions, but I usually find that people really aren't that big of douchebags, and it usually takes someone or something to push someone to do douchebaggy things. Not always, but often. Maybe the driver just found out that his wife was cheating on him with his best friend, or that one of his kids was just found cut into pieces in a rapists basement, or that a terrorist/drug cartel was holding his family hostage unless he did bad things to that particular home owner... I bet you wouldn't be calling for his termination if one of those was the case. Just sayin'.

Like I said, we don't know what really happened here.

Well for the record I don't believe I called for his termination. Disciplinary action? You bet. Not necessarily termination.

I agree we do not know the circumstance, but it does bring up an interesting point of discussion: what set of circumstances excuses what types of behavior? So he was having a bad day, his wife left him, he found his daughter was pregnant by his wife's new boyfriend, etc. etc. Does that mean when he chucks something over a fence, breaking it which I believe we can safetly assume is an obvious disregard of his employer's standards, not to mention common courtesy, then we just turn our head and ignore it?

[Oh and that is the willfull part: he chose to throw it over the fence. What did he think would happen? If he had tried to set it carefully over the fence, then maybe, but chucking it like that? Looked pretty willfull.]

So, is some level of punishment justified or, since he had a bad day, can he just go around destroying all kinds of **** with impunity? I still think that it does not justify him breaking stuff, even if he is having a bad day. That isn't to say that the bad day couldn't, and shouldn't, influence how the behavior is addressed, but I don't think it excuses it entirely.

I agree with you, nothing really justifies his behavior. All I am saying is, if I were his employer, I would likely make my judgment based on the situation and how/why it came to that. As an outside reader, I would like to give the driver the same courtesy.

Agreed.

But put yourself in the shoes of the homeowner. How do you react then, when you go out to see what FedEx left and find your new flatscreen shattered on the driveway? Then you go check the video and see the guy chuck it over the fence.

Or his genealogy inquiry came back and he discovered he was related to Troutbum.

Just kidding. Nice points. But throwing the box IS cause for termination, no matter what the personal issue behind it. It was 95% clear that a flat-screen TV was in the box. I guess there's a small chance that someone had reused the box to ship something else. But throwing a box, with almost 100% chance that the TV would break; that is willful damage. It will cost the company money AND has damaged their reputation. Not even a long, long history of great employment performance is likely to offset this behavior and save his job. Of course, it's all hands on deck for shippers. These guys are working 12 hour shifts. Maybe they're just waiting to fire him until after the Xmas rush is done.
