Walker Kessler Should No Longer Play Until KO is Traded

View attachment 13376

Kessler is also 2nd in BPM for the team, behind Lauri. Lauri and Kessler seem to lead in most advanced stats, or be at least in the top 3 or 4 on the team. Everything points to Kessler being a net positive on the court. Where, looking here at PER, everyone from Olynyk on down at barely at, or in fact below, league average. The only ones over 20 are Markkanen and Kessler. Bottom line, Kessler needs more minutes and Markkanen needs to be more of a focus on the team in general.
Also, on a Per 36 basis Kessler is just killing it. Here is his rebounding highlighted. Leading the team by a decent margin with Vando. His scoring is about 13 per 36, more than Vando. His other stats all hold up, with his blocks off the chart at nearly 4 per 36, and highest FG% on the team, granted with fewer attempts. At per 36 he would fully be a starting center, by these stats at least. I, for one, feel he needs more minutes, first to help him develop and second to see what he can do with it.

I'll preface this by saying I really like Kessler, and have been super impressed. I think he should continue to get as many opportunities as he can handle.

Just to balance out the board a little it has to be noted that Kessler is really rough in a half court offense. Hardy doesn't even know what to do with him most of the time. He isn't a good screener/roll guy/or pick and pop guy, is useless off ball, and can't (or hasn't been allowed to) post up. The only way it is working is when the defense completely forgets he is on the court and a teammate is able find him unguarded right next to the hoop. He's also generally playing all of his minutes against bench units.

I don’t know those two back door alley ups last night were ****ing sick and we weren’t doing much after that.

They were great, but I'm not sure the plan should be for him to be so irrelevant to a half court offense that he nobody guards him.

I like Kessler, but remember he hasn't played that many clutch minutes against good teams. Not saying he cannot perform there, but those stats are a bit inflated by the fact that he plays vs bench players like 60% of his minutes or something like that.

With that being said, Vando is not impressing me atm. Maybe go oversized on the frontcourt and have Markkanen guard one of the shiftier guards hoping he doesn't get burned too badly. My only concern is that Vando and Kessler are not interchangeable, and KO/Lauri has to come out for Kessler to work.

I will be disappointed if we dont give him high value minutes soon enough though. I wanna see how he fairs there.

Well, Kessler is a bench player, so the comparisons and stats are apt. If anything it shows he needs more time against the 1st units because his advanced and per 36 stats do not sound like a bench player, they look like a starter caliber player. So he needs more of those minutes to really see what he is capable of. Or not, as the case may be. But either way, they need to play him more. It is win-win for us, either he helps us win games or he helps the tank.

the fact dok is averaging 18, 16 and 4 on 83% FGs (better than kessler in everything but blocks) should show anybody how useful per 36 numbers are for people who don't play anywhere near 36 minutes.

don't get me wrong. i like kessler, i like what he's done as a rookie and i was bullish on him coming out of auburn. but per 36 numbers for somebody who only plays 14 minutes just don't paint the most accurate picture.

There is a huge difference. Dok is only a 20 minute sample size while Kessler is playing real minutes.

He should be figuring out that stuff in the G League... where guards are always looking to setup bigs... this nba experience is completely dumb.
