Its Time to Tank

Simmons still the dude who once did this to the Jazz. I'd say that's worth the risk of giving up Beasley and Sexton.

Is he the same guy though? Watching him this season, he doesn't seem to have anywhere near the same athleticism as he did with the Sixers, and his defense has slipped as well. The back injuries may have taken a toll on him. Not to mention the mental aspect of it all. He may just be completely broken at this point.

If he was still this guy, then it would definitely be worth taking a chance on him, but I really don't think he is.

So we're also just going to be benching our best remaining players?

This is the type of thing you do to have a great chance at a top 2-3 pick. Not something in the 6-8 range.
It’s a completely different environment between the play in and odds being more equal… a 30-40% chance at top 4 is enticing enough and the consolation prize is a pick 6-10 spots higher. Blazers did this last year… it’s not unheard of.

You don’t have to “bench” your best players but rest the remaining guys as needs arise and skew minutes more towards dev projects. Probably can’t just deactivate guys like OKC did with Horford… trading one of JC/Mike and one of Vando/KO and playing Ochai/Sexton/THT/Kessler/Dok will put you in that range. Head to head matchups with OKC and SA last 20 games mean you may be able to make up some ground... maybe not nefarious ways but just cuz a guy is hurt and losing those games is a two for one type of deal.

What would we have to trade to move from 15 to 7/8 in this year's draft? Whatever we get in the sell off plus improving our pick will be worth it.. and you get the 30-40% shot at landing a top 4 pick.

Talent and size wins rings buddy. Sometimes you got to take risk.
That ain't going to happen, buddy. Not with Ben Simmons. Dude, has mental health issues, always hurt and wearing out his welcome in Brooklyn. What makes you think he'll be different here, with the Pretenderzz? He'll want out in a heartbeat.

Look at the Warriors... It shouldn't take a whole lot of time allocated to projects to make you lose more games. Swapping one vet for one dev project would mean at least 3 more loses to our current team. The tank can still fly... or something like that... if we want it to.

Eh. The Warriors were top heavy and lost their top.

6-8 range is typically around 30 wins.

We're not gonna finish 20-46. Even if we sell off Conley and Clarkson for nothing, like, today, with the sheer volume of tanking teams on our schedule, there's just no way.
There aren't a bunch of tanking teams this year.

I'd love a trade with the Warriors to get Moody.

Sure, but we have players who would be HUGE for them.

Kelly Olynyk with the Warriors? My god.

Beasley would be a great fit for them as well.
Salary match is tricky... like would they do Wiseman and Moody for KO? Likely want a pick on top of it...

I think they would cash in on Wiseman if they could... big side benefit is dropping 13M from the cap for next year... but I think he might be a bust and I doubt they'd move both guys unless they were doing a bigger deal.

I would hate to have WIseman.

Bruh Ben is broke AF. They would jump at the chance to do that deal. We should not be touching his contract unless it comes with a sweetner... but he'd be a great tank commander and maybe a miracle happens.
I know some people have no faith in the young bull finding a place on this roster, and maybe he won't , But anyone trading for Ben the bum now, is committing career suicide on a Adam Silver platter. aka that type of blatant tank move, would get you handing over assets.
Simmons is the laughing stock of the NBA . He is still after all his therapy, afraid to shoot. I watched him warming up for a game, never took one single j. kept dunking and
looking around like he was in an empty gym. He has no respect from the players anymore either.

Wondering is the early issue between Poole and Green are not part of it. Plus the fact that this team getting older. But Steph is just incredible.

6-8 range is the "goal" of tanking... allows you a real shot at moving to the top 4 and will put you in a higher draft tier than 12-16 (which is where I think we end up).

When thinking about this team... how many players on the current roster will be helping us win games in 2 years?

- Conley - nope
- KO - maybe but he already slow and ground bound... plus would need a new contract (which could be a trap)
- Lauri - Fo sho
- JC - Maybe but needs a new deal to do that
- Sexton - Prolly helpful but not amazing.
- Vando - Young but he's a third big and will hit FA.
- THT - FA by then... maybe?
- Kessler - Fo sho
- Ochai - He might suck
- Simone - I think so but also FA by then.

Like there is just so little to hold on to long term here.

This is where Im at as well. For me its not a case of intentionally creating the worst team possible to increase our lottery chances but what is the point of keeping the likes of JC and Olynyk who are 30 plus and will cost to keep around in the event they are on the team in a couple of years time. Right now they're excellent trade pieces for teams with genuine chances of competing and we can accumulate more draft picks while also freeing up cap space if we trade them, with the added benefit that we likely get worse thus increasing lottery odds while also creating spot in the rotation for young players.

Markkanen is entering his prime as an NBA player. There is no way he'll sign an extension with the Jazz if it's looking like he's gonna be doing nothing but losing on a tanking/rebuilding team.

A tank doesn't stop on a dime. No matter who you draft, the losing will most likely continue for years. Look at Orlando.
