Because most teams guard Brunson with the bigger guard. That would force the smaller guards on Don, or vice versa. They would probably be very dominant. Knicks fans would love it. IDK how it would do in the PO.

Sounds like a layup line on defense.
I could see Thibs getting the most out of Donovan, especially with his pride of playing for NYK.
Not saying it would win rings, but they would be a team the Knicks fan would love and they would win a lot of games.

Knowing how he has all the tools to be a really good defender, and showed it in college, to then turn out to be a turnstile in the league when everyone is watching.

To be fair, defending in college and defending in the NBA are two completely different beasts.
Unless you are Walker Kessler of course, because for some reason he is even better in the NBA than in college. . .
I don’t think many would argue Don has the tools to at least be a better than average perimeter defender, NBA or not.

+1 . The main reason why i always prefer Rudy to Don, Don is 10 times more talented but do only the effort that suit him. Rudy is not much talented but become a good player working hard.

Donovan Mitchell the new McGrady?
I’ve always been one to say that Mitchell has the physical tools to be a good defender, and I still think that’s true, but I also don’t think he can be a good defender while being such a high usage player. There are no small guards in the NBA who are super usage players and also good defenders.
There are limits to the amount of energy you can expend and I just don’t think you can be a 30+ usage guy and be a good defender as a small guard. You have to spend so much more energy when you don’t have size on defense. Looking at the list of smaller guards in the NBA…..how far down in usage do you have to go to find a good defender? You could argue Curry….but that’s about it unless you want to call Shai or Jrue small (they aren’t).
One of two things needs to happen. Mitchell needs to scale down and be a 25% usage guy who plays good defense or he can’t play with another deficient defensive guard.
