Look at the result of the trade not what happened than for the Gasol trade. Marc Gasol is a good player and they got cap space to make a more balanced roster. It looked like a salary dump at the time but Gasol sure panned out.
Giving away Pau for bunch of scrubs was the worst trade in NBA history. Yes, they got lucky and a second rounder they picked up as a part of it, turned out OK. Yet he is nowhere near the caliber of Pau. Even if you look at end result, Memphis got screwed big time. There is just no way around the fact this was an unbelievable gift to LA. Just look at rings their fingers.
AK would not start for them. Wesley Johnson maybe? the guy they just drafted to play SF. He would start. They also traded there other pick for Martell Webster. and they still have Corey Brewer and Wayne Ellington. They have plenty of wing players. And they are all young so they don't need AK. And Love & Beasley at the 4. So AK is not needed. They want to develop the young players. They don't care about AK.
You are missing the point completely. They want to dump Al's salary, and look at what offers they are getting for it:

Dallas is offering Stevenson (2ppg) and Caroll (also 2ppg player, plus he is owed 7.5 mil AFTER next year). Dallas is not even willing to give them expiring contract of Dampier for Jefferson. Yes, 35 year old Dampier, who is done playing good ball, but has expiring contract as his only value. No, that offer is too good. As I told you before, when a team is looking to dump salary, offers are not very good. Jazz can easily step in here, give a good player with expiring contract plus picks, and get the deal done. That offer is much better than Stevenson and Caroll, who is owed money after this season, and even better than Dampier, which Dallas is not even willing to offer.
The reports are saying that its protected and if the protection keeps them from getting the draft pick after 7 years than its unprotected. You cannot trade away a draft pick 7 years in the future. That is total speculation. So this speculation needs to stop that we could of got beasley if we tried. Its bogus.
Everything we talk about on this board is speculation. But this one has merit. Miami gave up 2 first rounders to Toronto for Bosh. They don't have a first pick next year. Do you think if we stepped up and offered a first rounder next year, which could be a lottery pick (if we do not make play-offs after lozing Booz or if Memphis' pick get triggered), but even if not - an unprotected first rounder they can use right away, they would not take it over Wolves pick swap, which may not even be done for next 7 years, and perhaps not even then? Right when they need cheap talent (i.e. draft picks!!!) to fill out the roster around big 3?
Let's be intellectually honest here. And yes that means no more nonsense how Memphis giving up Gasol somehow turned out to be a good trade for them.
