Should the Jazz "Unleash" Collin Sexton?

I would guess the more relevant question is if it really matters. Is Hardy fixed in his assessment of Sexton enough to make this point moot? We really needed someone who could shoot at the 2 ever since Hornacek retired. We had Gordan Giricek who could have provided that role but Sloan didn't really like him. We opened this up a bit moving for Korver but was still underutilized. I'd be curious what level of flexibility people think Hardy has on this issue.

I could buy into this but I just don't get how Hardy has handled him. I get he needs tough coaching and stuff but at some point its dumb to keep holding him back... especially with Key and JC out there doing the same dumb stuff without as much of the good. Maybe Hardy can fully be converted to the gospel of Collin... I mean if Cy can then Will should be able to be convinced.

Kind of interesting that the worst 2-man backcourt lineup (per basketballreference net rating) was Keyonte/Sexton, but the 5-man lineup of Keyonte/Sexton/Lauri/Hendricks/Collins was only a -0.6 and was the 2nd most used 5-man lineup Sexton played in. The next most used was the 3-guard lineup where Clarkson replaces Hendricks in that same lineup and they were a +11.2

Even though these are the 2nd and 3rd most used 5-man lineups with Sexton, they are still pretty small sample size of 98 and 55 minutes, which shows how much Utah was really throwing everything at the wall last year throughout the season.

I've wanted Isaac for a few years. How much of Isaac can Hendricks be?

I don't know. I believe in Isaac more as a defensive wrecking ball than I do Taylor... but I think Hendricks will be a better offensive player. I also think you'll always be crossing your fingers he will stay healthy. It would be a good gamble but the cost this offseason to acquire him versus maybe last offseason will be worlds apart. I don't know that he's available.

I think they are fairly different. The Roco comps for Hendricks are pretty accurate. If he works in the NBA he's going to be a volume 3pt guy who doesnt do much else offensively and can be long on defense.

Isaacs is much more active on defense and can be more of a defensive quarterback at the 5 if there isnt a bruiser matchup he has to play against.

He started 51 games....

The first year it was a priority to limit his minute and keep him healthy. Hardy coached Sexton into his most efficient offensive season by leaps and bounds. I think the relationship is fine. If we get a repeat of last year's handling this year, then you can complain. Until then, it's a progression that is progressing to more and more trust.

I think it's more on Danny to provide Hardy with a player or two to surround Sexton/Lauri that makes them make more sense as our two top options.

The Jazz's main strategy to lose games last year was to undermine their defense by playing small (or defensively limited) guards with John Collins at the 5. As a result, the Jazz couldn't stop guys on the perimeter and couldn't stop guys at the rim either. Some of that is easily fixable.

Colin Sexton isn't a natural point guard. He's ball dominant and is very drive/shoot-first. Statistically, he was somewhat comparable to Kemba Walker at the same age. He's probably an adequate starter, depending on what the rest of the lineup looks like, but I wouldn't call him a go-to scorer or primary offensive player we can really build around. If teams want smother him in the paint, they can.

The Jazz lack the on-ball creation and isolation scoring that the really competitive teams have. I think they're basically a .500 team if they keep their vets and coach more with the intention of winning games.

They played Collins because they were trying to win. Their strategy to lose games was play rookies, 2-way contracts, and guys who might be out of the NBA in the next 1-3 years.

I have a feeling we’re going to see a lot of “leashing” this next year of not only Sexton but any player who is playing too well. It will probably start earlier this year. The stakes are higher. Maybe the strength of the west will allow the team to play hard with minimal leashing.

The Jazz had the worst defense in the league by a country mile, and Collins was the anchor of it. Now the Jazz are trying to trade Collins.

The Jazz played Keyonte, but didn't rotate in Hendricks, Brice or their 2-ways until the last 25 games.

Very few players are natural point guards. Most have to learn the position. Sexton had a 30% assist rate last year w/ a 12.1% turnover rate

That's good for 19th in the NBA. Put a better team around him w/ less negative players and you might be boosting him a few percentage points. Jalen Brunson is 10th at 33.5%.
