What's a Poker League?
A poker league is a group of players who play a series of poker tournaments. A portion of the buy-in from each tournament is set aside. Each player receives points for the tournaments they play based on: number of players, buy-in, where they placed . The points are used to rank the players. At the end of the set number of tournaments the top ranked players (usually top 9-10) play in a championship tournament. Typically there is no buy-in for the championship tournament. The money that was set aside from the previous tournaments is used for the prize pool for the championship event.
Is playing in a league poker tournament different then playing in a regular poker tournament?
The biggest difference is that part of the buy-in is set aside for the championship event. Also, because points are awarded for finishing position, including non-paid finishing positions, players may play for points as well as money. Other than that the tournament plays exactly as it would if it was a stand-alone event.
Do I have to commit to the league in any way in order to participate in league tournaments?
No! There will be no sign-up process for the league itself. Right now I'm just trying to get an idea of what the interest in such a thing is and how the likely participants want the league set-up: schedule, point system, buy-ins, number of games, final tournament specifics, etc..
Do I have to do anything, like pay a fee or join a group, to be in a poker league?
For some leagues, yes. For my league there is nothing you have to do other than show up for a league poker tournament. All buy-ins will have the same amount withheld, so all players will be considered to be part of the league and will be awarded points towards qualification for the championship tournament.
Like always, I collect no rake, fee or any form of compensation (other than your good company) for hosting. While a portion of the buy-in is withheld from each tournament it will all be paid out at the championship tournament. None will be used for league administration, supplies or my costs.
If I'm in the league do I have to show up for every tournament?
No. Players will be able to drop a set number of scores and/or miss a certain number of games without being penalized. For instance, if there are 12 tournaments players may be able to drop their 4 lowest scores or miss 4 tournaments (or any combination of missed games/lowest scores equaling 4) and count the other 8 tournament results for their final score.
Even if you miss more games then the amount you can drop it is still very possible to have enough points to qualify for the championship tournament. I will not have a minimum games played requirement for qualification for the championship tournament.
There may be a play-in game prior to the championship tournament to fill the final seat at the championship event. I would probably have a min. games played requirement to be entered into the play-in game.
If I don't want to participate in the poker league can I still play in league poker tournaments?
Yes. However, your buy-in will still have the same amount withheld and you will receive points for your performance in any league tournaments. If you qualify for the no buy-in championship tournament and choose not to participate your spot will be given to the next highest ranking player.
Essentially, anyone who participates in a league tournament will be considered part of the league, but you have no obligation to care one way or the other.
Can I bring a guest to a league tournament?
Yes. However, RSVPs will be open to previous participants before they are open to new participants, so you may have to wait for RSVPs to open up to new players before adding them.
Because previous participants may be fighting for their rank they will be given an opportunity to sign-up for the next tournament before people who have not played in any league tournaments. Once previous participants have had a chance to sign-up all remaining seats will be open to anyone who is interested in playing, regardless of their interest in the league.
How frequent will league tournaments be?
We're currently planning for 1 tournament a month with a total of 10 tournaments. Players will be able to drop 3 scores, counting their top 7 tournament results.
If things move along without any hiccups the first league game will possibly be Feb. 17th.
I'm hoping for feedback from those who might be interested.
