NFL Talk

There have been many, many excellent SB's over the last decade or so but all pale in comparison to the Giants /Bills one for me. I know we each hold things special in our memories but I still remember but much of that game vividly. We were in the middle of the war in the Middle East or whatever we called it and there therefore was much precaution taken to ensure there was no terrorist activity. The Americana/tension vibe in the building was palpable. Then, Whitney came in, partly lipsung or not, and crushed the National Anthem pushing the patriotism/SB feel to an almost off the charts level. Then, the game started. It was the unstoppable juggernaut of a Bills team (who I believe scored 49 in the first half the previous week vs. Oakland in the AFC Championship game) vs NY, the tough, grind it out, full of heart Parcells coached team. They were the antithesis of one another. And the game was always close throughout and full of memorable plays that kept this sort of David vs. Goliath going. My favorite two were Ottis (OJ) Anderson's run (off tackle left I picture it) in which about ten yards down the field, he gave a wind-up forearm shiver to a Bills tackler. Later on, on a drive that I believe was a must score mid-way or late through the 4th for the Giants, NY converted on a 3rd and 15 or something like that in which Hoss completed about a 9 yard pass which the receiver then took, juking defender after defender, fighting for every little inch, to get the first down. Just some of the most gutty plays you could imagine. Buffalo got the ball last, and I recall a run (or maybe screen pass) which Thurman Thomas took for a big gain, maybe 35 yards or so, I believe between the right guard and RT, down the right side. Back and forth. Back and forth. A great team vs. a great team. And one that came down to the last play.

Some of these other ones were great but did not have the background drama and also weren't great throughout. The Rams/Titans one was boring as hell in the first half. The Pats/Carolina one was also a snoozer in the first half. The Rams/Pats was sort of meh before the ending. The Giants/Pats was great because of the undefeated season but I never remember feeling that intangible, that something so special is in the air feeling, like I did with NY/Buffalo. But that's just me.

I agree. This was the best Super Bowl ever with one of the greatest plays in Super Bowl history. The Mark Ingram 3rd down reception and run where he broke 5 tackles to get the first down was an incredible moment. Definitely one of the 5 greatest plays in Super Bowl history.

Few rapidfire things

-I don't know that Alex Smith has improved at all from a skill standpoint. He's just confident now with a competent team and making fewer mistakes.

-Eli Manning was absolutely incredible. I don't know how many QBs could take the beating that he did and against a good secondary on the road and not just win, but do it without any turnovers.

-I feel bad for Cundiff. I also hate Cundiff

-I can't hate Cundiff too much, superbowl rematches almost never happen.

-I'm pretty excited to watch the SB this year. In interest of not jinxing anything, I'm not going to say, "I can't wait to watch Brady just get pummeled the entire game".

-Katie is like most Niner fans; bad losers and even worse winners.

So not sure what the Denver D coordinator is doing taking the Oakland head coaching job. They just gave their past. Lacy what 1 year after he was dealt a number or injuries, letting the top corner in the NFL go, and giving him a QB 1/4 the way into the season.

To me that's the true black hole for coaches but I guess you only get a small chance ever to be a NFL head coach.

To be honest I'm completely fascinated by the current Colts storyline. What's going to happen with the coaching spot? What's going to happen with Peyton? I'm sure they are going to draft Luck, but then what do you do with Peyton? He can't be traded...I would guess that they would have to release him.

Given the recent success of Newton and Dalton the bar is going to be set pretty high for Luck and RG3. Long gone are the days when you would draft a QB and expect him to sit for couple of seasons. Rookie QB's are expected to produce immediately.

I am too. I personally think they should pick up that bonus because Peyton deserves every cent of it and because it gives the Colts an asset to build with. I think they should then trade him with some other vets to another team.

On your second point I kind of disagree. If a team has a competent QB and they draft someone else - generally speaking - I think that player will still sit until they're obviously better or they capitalize on an opportunity. However, with respect to Luck, Manning, and the Colts, all of the stakes are very high. With the stock and acumen that Luck has he had better produce out of the gate. Manning might be done anyway, but that organization is cleaning house anyway (and rightfully so). It's kind of scary and crazy to go from arguably (and I would certainly argue this) the best QB of all time to a rookie suddenly and hope it turns out well (and IMO, going that route seems like the common sense thing to do).

What teams could especially use Manning? Jets seem to be the clear candidate there (though I don't know what their asset situation is like, nor do I know how the NFL CBA works). Bears? The Harbaugh teams/this year's conference finalists have good QBs but you can't tell me that Manning wouldn't be a huge upgrade over them. Titans seem like they could be a dark horse. Chiefs? Vikings? What about the Cowboys, that would be a hell of a story.

I'm really interested to see how this pans out. Hopefully it turns out more 'good' than 'interesting' for the Colts.

I'm forever Niners, and a big fan of Alex Smith, but I would take a healthy Peyton Manning in a second.

As you probably know, they hired a coach today (the former Ravens D-coordinator). As for Peyton, I expect that he'll be released before they have to kick in the $28M roster bonus. Then I expect a huge bidding war with the Dolphins, Seahawks, Cardinals, Redskins, and possibly the Cowboys and Jets getting involved, for the services of Manning. It will be fun to watch.
