Should Cody spend time in the G LEAGUE

Should Cody Williams get sent down to the Stars for a stint?

Because you dont see guys who are at this stage usually. They dont play.
That's fair: I do not watch the G-League. Good to know that we probably had some other rookies who very similarly bad at this stage and turned out at least OK. Because right now it looks like Cody cannot score in any way or form and he cannot dribble against any kind of defense.

Well, it was a long time ago and my memory is a bit hazy but IIRC Hayward showed some clear potential and production quite early. In his first three games he averaged 6 PPG and 4 RPG in only 20 minutes. He was often confused and hesitant but he did produced when he had an opening. It simply that afterwards the Jazz went on the insanely hot streak (16-3) and he was pushed to the garbage 2-4 minutes per game in favor of the vets.

And Hendricks last year simply did not get any burn until December, but in December he was clearly demonstrating his shooting touch and the defensive capabilities. Unless Cody suddenly greatly improves in the next week I see no comparison there.

I really have to reach back in my memory to find someone equally struggling on the Jazz. I think CJ Miles was pretty bad and comparable... but he was actually 18 for almost his entire rookie season and fresh out of high school. Williams is already 20 and had a year of college, so yeah...

The only thing I really remember from Hayward's rookie year is him getting the ball thrown at him by DWill because he didn't know where to be on the court. Looking up his box scores he didn't score in double digits until December 29. He wasn't getting a lot of minutes, but also not doing anything in those minutes he was getting. Like I said, he wasn't maybe as bad to the degree that Cody is bad, but I'm not sure how much degrees matter here. Hayward wasn't a very exciting prospect until the end of his rookie year (when he was 21yo).

Also, below are some of the Jazzfanz thread about Hendricks being a bust last October/November. He didn't show anything until he got called up in mid-December.

I wholeheartedly agree on the "chill on Cody" movement. Its not only because things are not final, but also because we all know he sucks so there is no disagreement and repeating it is just toxic bot behaviour.

Cody's body is so far behind I think you have to give him at least two off seasons to get his body to where it needs to be.

If you aren't that patient, then at least give him one off season to work on his shot and foot work.

If you aren't that patient, then at least give him until February to adjust to the speed and length of the NBA.

If you aren't that patient, then at least give him until the end of December to learn where he's supposed to be on the court.

Or do whatever you want I guess.

Right, nobody is pretending that him looking awful is a good thing or that he will definitely turn in to something later. It sucks that he isn't more ready sooner, but we can only be patient at this point.

Hayward also played on a team that thought they were good and for Sloan, a coach who hated rookies. Hayward was a good rookie, he just had a bad coach for rookies.

Hendricks and Williams were picks based off athleticism and positional size without much consideration for skills/feel. They are projects. Sadly for Hendricks it might be failed project due to the injury. He did look slightly better this year compared to last year, but he was still a 6'9 athlete without much ball skills. Hopefully Cody's physical development will unlock his ability to use his skills, if he has them.

Cody was not really drafted for physical traits, he's a well below average athlete currently.

He was drafted for hypothetical physical traits if he ever gained weight and how those would pair with his BBIQ and hypothetical handle and jumpshot.

His jumpshot was always a huge question mark as well as his form was completely broken and needed to be fixed for him to have a shot in the league.

Overall, the lack of progress over the last 2 years is... Very alarming. Since the beginning of 2023, he hasn't produced at any level and his jumpshot form has gotten worse.

We'll check back in three years idk.

I think it's also worth pointing out that the Jazz don't have a huge history of drafting 19 year olds, another reason why we're not used to having to be as patient.

Yeah, him struggling with his shot could have been anticipated, but personally I didn't really plan on. If he could just hit open jump shots he would be playable.

Andrei Kirilenko, Deshawn Stephenson, CJ Miles, Dante Exum, Trey Lyles, Taylor Hendricks... there are some, but the Jazz are accustomed to being a mature, veteran team where rookies don't normally play much. Rudy Gobert didn't really play as a rookie until the last several games of a bad season. Jerry Sloan didn't even play Deron Williams much as a rookie.

Dante Exum playing a lot as a rookie was a bit of an anomaly for the Jazz.
