What's new

Last good song you listened to?

You'll enjoy this Mr Gandalfe, the line about East Berlin is probably pretty accurate at the time, Queensland at the time was basically a far right duchy to the North of Australia.

I never really got into Elvis Costello, I don't mind his stuff but I never really find myself in the mood to say, "You know what I really want to listen to some of that Elvis Costello."
That is awesome! It's like stories about Lenny Bruce, or City Lights Bookstore in SF. Or, hell, Biafra and Alternative Tentacles records themselves.

Not the best recording of this song, but the only one with a censored title.

(I love Nouvelle Vague. Having hot French women sing punk songs just hits a spot in me, apparently. I saw them in Portland a couple of years ago, and we stopped by a local pub for dinner beforehand. As our food arrived, they walked in - I thought it was them, but then I heard them speaking French - and sat in the booth behind us. I heard them order a bottle of wine. I told the waiter to put the wine on my tab, then walked to their table, told them we were big fans, and said we'd see them at the show. I didn't tell them about paying for their wine, but they probably found out when they went to pay?

Elvis Costello was probably the first artist who made me realize that music could MATTER, especially the lyrics. I know, I know, I should have learned that before I was 14, but, whatever.

Polyester was a big loss for Melbourne but market forces are relentless, hell even when people bought CDs they were 25% more expensive than everyone else.

Back in about 1991 I somehow ended up with a cassette tape of a 1968 Neil Diamond concert. I didn't think much of it at the time and kind of thought Neil was for old ladies. It became one of my favorite live albums ever. I can't find it doing a search but I do love me some Neil. This concert from the Greek Theater in 1972 is pretty well known but not as rocking as my old '68 tape. Still really cool and super interesting how differently he sang the songs than on my tape.

Neil Diamond?

Nunce

Neil Diamond?

Nunce

Haha. Yep.

“Girl, You’ll Be A Woman Soon” has become one of Diamond’s most well-known hits, having been covered numerous times and of course appearing in Tarantino’s Pulp Fiction (1994). The song has maintained its status as both a classic hit and relevant piece of pop culture, despite the clear weirdness in Diamond’s lyrics.

This song is sick, twisted, and at its core a love ballad for teenaged girls. But I’ll be goddamned if it isn’t a great one."
