Jackpotting Around - The Great Walker Kessler Debate

The debate has n the Walker Kessler extension approach and discussion on the rotation.

Also if you wanted to max Young, you could get him to come to Utah. Maxing Young would be insane though
Do you mean Trae Young? Not super-maxing Young (and keeping picks) might be a scenario I can get on board. Would need to load up on defense like crazy overnight (which makes the idea of shrugging about Kessler all the more puzzling but I guess it does also open up the cap flexibility for such a move).

You could probably pick up some assets if/when you trade him if we find a better prospect from our many draft picks/assets/whatever at the free agent max. The problem the Hawks have is the incumbent disadvantage of being expected to offer significantly more than the free agent max to a probably-catastrophically flawed player.

By next year I’m probably ready to win a bunch of regular season games and be a paper tiger in the playoffs. We’d have time to develop whoever it is we have if there’s anything to develop and probably a better environment for development (actually trying to win games and probably accomplishing that) in the pursuit of becoming a real tiger.

No one can super max Young besides Atlanta (unless it's a S&T but that would be extremely difficult to make happen I would assume).

I'm just a no go on Young for anything over 35 million per year, which he would never agree to, at least for Utah.

GI've me Braun if he can take another step this year. Two way athlete who has gotten better every year

I don't know if maxing him is insane. If you essentially get him for just cap space rather than paying him a ton and trading a ton for him. I just think that is the nature of FA though. If you are going to get the guy you must pay the premium. I think he's more likely headed to Brooklyn, Wash, or Atlanta ponies up. Could also see some sign and trade scenarios coming up.

I guess I'll say this... he's the only max worthy guy I think we could actually get into a conversation with. Lebron is a FA too...KD likely signs an extension... but those aren't worth discussing.

The rest of the guys are likely well within reach even if we signed Walker to an extension.

Good debate, guys. My guess is the main issue here is simply his value, i.e., his projected value as a player in the coming years. How much to pay for an offensively limited center? We’ll see if both sides compromise before the season kicks off.
I think that there is a chance they just don't like his player type and don't want to commit to it... my issue is then they should absolutely trade him. He will improve but I doubt he's gonna go Brook Lopez. By waiting they will subject themselves to another team valuing his services above what they are offering now. Maybe he gets squeezed but I doubt it as long as he's healthy. I think every cap space team would have interest in him and depending on how extensions play out... he may be the top RFA that teams see as gettable.

Its hard to value a guy at 2 firsts plus Reaves in a trade.... and also break off contract negotiation talks because the guy isn't willing to take a deep discount.

Just for reference. My guess is the Jazz are willing to do it at 20M but Walker is asking 30M. But I think Walker is still willing to talk. Logically anywhere from 23-28M seems doable if parties kept talking. Maybe stack a couple million in incentives there for all-defense. If you don't value him at that number then you should have traded him. Kind of a **** or get off the pot ya know.

I think 40-45M is fair for Trae and there are some instances where I could see a team mitigating some of his issues while still accentuating his positives.

BUT there is zero hope of that. He has a 49M option that if the offers are still bad next year he can opt into and wait it out.

>$30M I'm ok with the FO not signing, Kessler might be over valuing himself
$25-$30M - I personally would do that deal, but would want some team friendly frameworks to the deal like descending contract and/or team option. It's still understandable that the FO would hold off.
<$25M - Get the deal done, the FO is making a mistake

I would just be pushing for the 5th year and trying to get him anywhere in the 25-27 AAV range with the max descending values allowed per year. It would start at 30/31M and end up at 22M per year. Basically it would start at 19% of the cap and end up being 10% of the cap by year 5 (assuming 7% annual cap increases over the time period). It either gives you a starting center on a budget or increases his trade value as the contract and cap move.

I think a lot of this boils down to an indifference on Kessler... and if that is the case just move him. When Charlotte throws 35M+ on a 3+1 the asset value is trashed.

Colleagues, thy episode is noteworthy, excellent, for it even prompted my wife to inquire as to what I was transfixed by, thus stimulating hearty conversation about Jazz related themes.
Our cap discussions strengthening marriages! Thank you good sir.
