Jazz trade Devin Harris to Atlanta for Marvin Williams (merged)

If this ends at least some of the "dude maybe get ak back ??!!1" comments then it's a huge success.

Short-term this is a good move in that it fills a pressing need while only costing Utah at a position they had a surplus in. Longterm I'll only like this move if Marvin Williams does not exercise his $7.5 million player-option in 2013. Granted it's a small step back from the $8.3 mil he's due this year, but he was still an overpaid wing who is solid but not extraordinary in any particular area. It's a much better move for ATL in that it further enables them to make a run for Dwight Howard - or at the very least become a player in the summer of 2013. As for the Jazz...it definitely cuts into a chunk of that 2013 cap space they were looking at.

I think its a definite possibility that he opts out after this year. If he does, what are we going to do with the eleventy jillion dollars in cap space that we have? Sign 3 max free agents?

I like our size if nothing else. We have a solid frontcourt already and adding Williams at the 3 with Hayward at the 2 makes us long as hell. Looking simply at his career stats, his assists per game are a little bit of a concern for me. How is his ball movement? And while I read here that he's solid on defense, I wonder how good. His personal fouls per game is very low so I almost wonder if he's not aggressive enough. Because that's what I want. Aggressive, nasty, in your face, won't back down from no one mother ****ers. Doubt he's that. Again, anyone who can provide some insight on the guy will get some rep from me. KKKarolina? Your trailer park's down that way, no?

Whoa. Surprised no one else has mentioned this yet

Cutting edge thread. The future is now.

?? There's a whole 7 page thread on this already?!?!

Wow... you can start a thread?!?! Whoop Dee Doo!!

Quit bitching people. The other thread is titled "Possible trade" and it is 7 pages long. Starting a new thread after the deal is done is fine. If a mod altered the other thread's title to indicate that the "possible trade" happened then I'd understand your complaining. Otherwise, quit whining. I hate when people refer me to threads with hundreds of posts already and expect me to go there for some new/updated/breaking news.

OP - thanks for posting! And, I like the trade. Mo Williams is about the same or better than Devin at the point. And I like having a better 3 than we have now (allowing hayward to play the 2) than two equal caliber PGs.

Here is Hollingers take on him:

+ Passive combo forward with good midrange shot. Excellent finisher in transition.

+ Long-armed wing defender who needs to add strength. Can play 4 in a pinch.

+ Decent lateral movement; solid defender who often guards opponent's best wing.

Williams is a perfectly decent small forward, which would be totally fine if he hadn't been the second overall pick and then got a five-year, $35 million contract when his rookie deal expired. Compared to those expectations, he's been a disappointment. His lack of improvement over the past three seasons has been particularly deflating; despite a sign here and a flash there, his production hasn't budged an inch.

The best thing going for Williams is his midrange jumper -- he made 43.7 percent of his long 2s last season. However, he's been unable to extend his range to the 3-point line, which would make a huge difference for him in efficiency. Although Williams doesn't look for his offense, his size and athleticism often force opposing wings to foul him; he averaged 0.32 free throw attempts per field goal attempt without being terribly aggressive or tricky. Again, this tantalizes, but no turning of the corner appears in the offing.

Defensively, it's a similar story. Williams is a good, solid 3 with outstanding length and reasonable mobility, but he's not a guy who eats nails for breakfast. You don't want to match him up against top-notch scorers every night, although the Hawks often were forced to.

Basically, this is what he is. He's 25 and he hasn't progressed in three years. He'll have a nice career as a sometime starter at the 3, but I think we can stop projecting beyond that.

You can use a massive amount of cap room for alot more than simply signing players to max-contracts. Excessive space is what landed Rajon Rondo in Boston, Serge Ibaka in OKC and Gordon Hayward in Utah.

I think it's more likely Marvin opts in knowing he won't land a $7.5 million salary elsewhere and will still only be 28 yrs old when he hits the market again in 2014, but best-case scenario the change of scenery lights a fire inside of Marvin and it all comes together for him and he has an outstanding season in Utah which would encourage him to opt-out and test the market. One thing I do like about him is his size, length, and ability to guard both the 3 and 4. The way so many teams run screen-roll you have to have some interchangability in your wings and Marvin definitely provides us with some of that. Again short-term I like it but longterm I do have my doubts.

Two M. Williams joing the Jazz in a matter of days!!! They could swap uniforms.

Marvin could start or could solidy come off the bench. I think he would be a solid sixth man and knows the role well, as he is the only lottery pick in history to never start (and he went one spot ahead of Deron).

Brian T. Smith: Harris-Williams trade has not been finalized but both sides are hopeful it will go through. Twitter

Irony.
This trade might hinge on Deron Williams re-signing with the Nets.
Because if Williams re-signs, Joe Johnson trade happens, and then the Marvin Wililams trade happens. I might have this all wrong...but if I don't, then this is all back to D-Will.

I read that the JJ trade goes through regardless if D-Will returns or not.
