Jazz trade Devin Harris to Atlanta for Marvin Williams (merged)

You can use a massive amount of cap room for alot more than simply signing players to max-contracts. Excessive space is what landed Rajon Rondo in Boston, Serge Ibaka in OKC and Gordon Hayward in Utah.

Good point but cant we still do that even with Marvins $7.5 Mil? I guess alot depends on if we extend Millsap.

Short-term this is a good move in that it fills a pressing need while only costing Utah at a position they had a surplus in. Longterm I'll only like this move if Marvin Williams does not exercise his $7.5 million player-option in 2013. Granted it's a small step back from the $8.3 mil he's due this year, but he was still an overpaid wing who is solid but not extraordinary in any particular area. It's a much better move for ATL in that it further enables them to make a run for Dwight Howard - or at the very least become a player in the summer of 2013. As for the Jazz...it definitely cuts into a chunk of that 2013 cap space they were looking at.

I'm assuming 60 million dollars is the cap number next off season. Jazz WERE at 16 million. Now they'll be at 23.5 million, still 37 million dollars under the cap. Even with cap holds, the Jazz should have monies for free agents.

I'm not sure how I feel. Devin was coming on strong last year, but Mo is better. Marvin Williams has always seemed like a disappointment to me when you consider where he was drafted. So many question marks.

If he does opt in, can we then flip him immediately next summer? He will be an expiring.

Also, I'm not sure how much we've really improved this off-season. I mean, on paper, sure Mo and Marvin sound better than Harris and Miles/Bell/Howard but let's not ignore the fact that Marvin's three point percentage could be and likely was an anomaly last season, that Mo doesn't really seem to fit in an up tempo style (which we should utilize) like Harris more or less did, that this could mean more playing time for Burks which sounds great and gets me excited but the fact remains he still has a lot of work to do, and maybe most importantly, that chemistry matters. These could be some solid moves but only time will tell.

In brief, I'm on the fence with how I feel about our two moves thus far. The change is sort of nice so if I had to choose, I like them. But it could handcuff us next summer and really isn't leading us to contender status. So who knows. Maybe Marvin will age well and evolve into a long, semi-elite defender or something.

If Marvin williams was that good, he wouldnt have been that overlooked for all those years behind freaking Josh Smith while being a 2nd draft pick. He is just an ok starter in a good team.

We should be better next year and we haven't screwed the re-build.
And, I don't think we are done.
Don't over think it. Mo + Marvin > Harris + Howard/CJ. All ****ing day.
