INSIDER- Jazz off season Grade

I want to see the Jazz fighting for 4-6 seeding and be a tough out or make it to the second round. Time to make another step Utah. Let's do this!

It honestly shouldn't be too difficult. I thought we were a better team than Denver last season, and they nailed the 6th seed. Now, were coming off with potentially a better PG, and more shooters to help spread the floor for Al. Couple that with more growth from Burks, God, and Fave, and you're looking at a pretty well-rounded team. I think 6th is a good target for us; its just that the rise of the Wolves, Blazers, Tankers, and Hornets will make things even more difficult for us this season.

Our present rule specifies no more than two paragraphs. Something to keep in mind with a post like this one is that the primary issue with posting walled-off content is the extent to which we remove the commercial viability of the insider service by functionally providing a replacement by giving the entirety of the relevant content.

On this website the primarily valuable information is the Utah Jazz recap. If one were thinking of subscribing to Insider, the free provision of all the Jazz content is a significant disincentive to purchase.

Also, Disney is bigger than us.

IMO the west stacks up like this:

Spurs and Thunder will be 1 and 2.

The Lakers with Nash will be the 3rd seed.

After that it gets messy.

Memphis took a step back by losing Mayo. The Clippers still have Paul and Griffin. Minnesota has been very agressive in improving their wing players with Roy, Budinger and maybe Batum. We have improved with the Williams's. Denver will improve with healthy players. I wonder how Phoenix is going to work out with Dragic, Scola and their pack of young players.

So I'd guess this

Spurs
Thunder
Lakers
Memphis
Clippers
Denver
Utah
Minnesota

With the Suns just missing the playoffs.

"Williams should be a significant upgrade over Harris."

I agree. Harris had some good moments here, but he wasn't a leader. Mo Williams may fail here, but he has a greater chance to fit in.

If we come in 7th again, then Corbin should lose his job.

With this talent, we should be competing for home court.

Did I read somewhere on the board that you're a lawyer? That sounded like lawyerspeak.

I definitely agree with that. The one thing I do wonder now that Jerry has retired is if Corbin has the same kind of untouchable position as Jerry had. Obviously Jerry got to that position by having years and years of success. But what are the expectations of Corbin that ownership has? Would he ever get fired if the Jazz don't make progress the next couple of years? It's hard for me to picture the Jazz firing a coach. Maybe the most they'd do is let his contract expire and then hire someone new.

Last time we were 7th seed was the 2002-2003 season!

No I get what you're saying. I'm surprised with all this optimism. I honestly don't think the Jazz will get home court this upcoming season. I think the Thunder, Spurs, Lakers, Clippers/Grizzlies will have those 4 spots but I see no reason the Jazz should finish lower than 6th.

The Jazz should get off to a much faster start this year, last year we were barely playing basketball at the start of the season. I also think our defense will be dramatically improved with Marvin Williams and a training camp to get the bigs on the same page. Additionally, the less compressed schedule will give us more time to instruct the younger players between games. It is actually very remarkable that we made the playoffs last year. This team is underrated.

Alright, with hindsight becoming pretty clear at this point, I'm going to say that this offseason was a disappointment for me. Sorry to be That Guy.

-The Jazz weren't able to acquire any extra picks
-The Jazz still haven't traded The Clogger
-The Jazz didn't trade nothing to get Mo Williams, they traded $8.5 million for him, but I still like Mo
-Marvin Williams?
-From my vantage point, there were some killer deals out there that the Jazz missed out on. Whether the Jazz had a need for any of the following, and even though I don't love all of these players, they're still good value and it's still frustrating: Darren Collison/Dahntay Jones for a total scrub, Jarrett Jack for squat, Jose Calderon being shopped for probably nothing, Luis Scola picked up for nothing, Dorrell Wright traded for nothing (an immensely better deal than Marvin Williams as he's a 2013 expiring), Brendan Haywood for nothing, it doesn't sound like the Jazz were even in the mix for Steve Nash, Goran Dragic, Jason Kidd, or Kyle Lowry.

Hopefully Mo is awesome AND signs longterm for cheap. And hopefully Marvin Williams becomes a super-role player. And hopefully the Jazz trade out of Big Al purgatory.

It feels like this offseason could've really been utilized to galvanize the (re)building plan, and through a combination of bad luck ('coin toss') and bad timing (if they had stayed under the cap, they could've been in a position to bid on an amnestied player/not eaten into 2013 cap space for Marvin Williams, or if they had waited been in a better position to get a better player than Mo Williams), it feels like marginal improvement of the roster. And Big Al is here, so not much can really change anyway.

I fully agree.

I agree in part Numb. It clearly coul dhave been loads better but it could have been worse. They could have done nothing but resign Howard and Miles...

Getting slightly better is an improvement on staying pat. I would have prefered a pick and moving out Big Al as well.

Call me naive but I'm very excited, and for some reason hopeful, about what Al could bring to the table this year. He's comfortable here now. He's been to the playoffs and tasted a little success and the humiliation that followed hopefully humbled him and made him want to work harder. He went to P3. He knows Derrick's trying to grab the wheel. He's in a contract year.

That's all.

Color me bummed if we're to be excited that Al might try to bury Favors even more than he already has, and he definitely will if he's still on the roster.

I'm always excited about the Jazz. I think if Al continued to improve his passing and made his O move in half the time he does now he would be a much better player.

I'm excited about this coming year and I'm excited about the new guys the jazz have picked up. I love Mo, but I see that Josh Childress was just placed on waivers and I wonder how he compares to Marvin. Marvin is probably a better defender and a little younger but Josh could have been had for cheaper I think. I've not seen either guy a ton, so I'll see what you all thought. Maybe a better comparison would be Carroll and Childress if he could help out the SF position.
