BYU Football 2012

I think pretty much everyone on both sides does this, at their convenience.

Maybe so, but what he was pointing out was not an example of this.

Some Ute fan said the Pac 12 is one of the best conferences. He then posted the rankings for each of the last 10 years (and the average over that time period) to prove his claim true.

If he had picked some random year or decade, say the 80s, then that would be living in the past. But he posted the most recent (current) 10 year stretch.

Wrong. I was referencing how Ute fans bash on Cougar fans for bringing up 1984 and then go back the necessary ten years to get the PAC to have the ranking they desire to prove their point. Hypocrisy at it's finest. And no, I don't bring up 1984, ever. It pains me to no end to admit Utah's program is better than BYU's right now.

He didn't have to go back 10 years to get the ranking he was looking for. The rankings he was using had the Pac at number 1 in 2010. He just went 10 years to get a decent sample size and use the average.

He used the most recent 10 year stretch and averaged the rankings, he wasn't going back to the past and fishing for an aberration.

How many of those ten years were relevant to Utah? Yup, just one. The one in which there is a #4 next to it.

Agreed. Who cares how good the Pac-12 was when it was the Pac-10 and Utah wasn't in it? Even the lame BYU fans who really do try to make BYU look better by discrediting the Pac-12 shouldn't.

All of those years are relevant to Utah. All those same teams are still in the conference. It may not have been relevant to Utah when it happened, but if you're talking about how good the conference in which Utah is currently a member of has been historically, then all of those years are relevant.

The Pac was ranked 4 last year with Utah (which is still very good and would also prove his point that the Pac doesn't suck) but he went back and averaged in order to show that last year either was or wasn't an aberration.

I don't know if USC was included in last year's rankings either. I know the BCS didn't include them. If they weren't factored into the conference rankings then that was a big blow to last year's Pac ranking. Either way, the Pac will be much improved this year, and they were ranked #4 last year.

I think we're talking about now, meaning the most recent season we have, rather than historically. Also, USC was included in the Sagarin stuff green posted the link to.

I think we're talking about now as well, but how do you prove it? I think the Pac is the second best conference this year, and possibly the best, with 4 teams that could finish in the top 10.

If they do finish as the #2 conference, the data that has been posted shows this would not be an aberration. The conference has been the #2 conference over the last 10 years

Of course YOU think that. By the way there is no way that the pac 12 will have 4 teams in the top 10.

Maybe not, but there are 4 teams that could finish in the top 10 (Utah, USC, Stanford, Oregon).

You can bet your bottom dollar the Pac 12 will have at least 2 teams in the top 10. Last year the Pac 12 had 3 teams finish the season in the AP top 10.

Do you agree with Sagarin that the Pac12 was 4th best conference last year?

USC has barkley returning and thier stud wide reciever so i think they will be great and probably in the top 3. I think there will be 10 teams better than oregon, and stanford lost luck so they will be in a semi rebuilding year. As for utah? Wynn is still the qb right? Enough said, no top 10 for them.

No, I think they were 2 or 3. That's why I wondered if USC was factored into the rankings. With 3 teams in the AP top 10, #4 seems a bit low.
But Sagarin shows the Pac to be the #2 conference the last 10 years yet you didn't disagree with that.
