What's new

Mission Accomplished

So...... what is Kevin's new job title? The Jazz already have a president and are getting a new GM. The already have a CEO. It almost feels like he's going to be an advisory guy, but that usually is something that is given to some old duffer who still wants to be involved but doesn't really 'do' anything.

I'm overreacting, but seriously, he's over 60, and if this is because of the 'grind' like he says it is, I think it is really a sign of even more 'changing of the guard' with Sloan's retirement and Larry's passing. I'm sure he stays for several more years and it will be interesting to see how the 'new guy' comes along. If they hand picked him thinking he's the future at the GM position this could be another great move. If not then I wonder if I will be able to get the Las Vegas Jazz on my satelite feed?

Kevin O'Connor current title is Executive Vice President of Basketball Operations and General Manager. If Jazz wanted to hire an assistant GM from another team they would have to give that person a promotion or they wouldn't be able to leave their team. Therefore, O'Connor giving up the GM title (if reports are true) maybe a bit of semantics that allow the Jazz to go get an assistant GM from another team such as Lindsay or Griffin as mentioned before
This is the best explenation that I have found so far and it works for everyone. He is the apparent successor but not yet, so there will be a smooth transition from 'within' in five or so years but they can't steal someones assistant GM without giving him some kind of upgrade.

Does anyone know if Utah has had an assistant GM like most teams? Hopefully this is just a sign of the Millers finally opening up their wallets and getting KOC some help. Utah is no longer the capital of stability where only 3-4 contracts need to be negotiated each year. Only 5-6 contracts will be in place next summer (assuming Marvin opts in and the Jazz still have Murphy on a rookie deal). There is no way KOC can devote himself to Paul and Al, looking for another 1-2 quality FA's, possibly extending Mo and Foye and doing his usual pre-draft evaluations. Kevin will do the big picture stuff, Lindsey will take care of working out the details.

they haven't had an assistant GM per se... but KOC has a whole organization of people working for him, so it's not like he was the lone talent evaluator before this. there was walt (personnel VP), fredman (head scout), sheubrooks (director of international scouting), and something like 6 full-time scouts.

KOCBEGONE....didn't KOC win? He didn't get fired, got promoted, and is considered to be one of the best GMs in the league.

And he still has his hands on the GM position here. I don't see how your mission was accomplished.....

Whoa whoa whoa! Take it easy with your flinging around logic and facts. You can put someones eye out. You are a mod and should know that logic and facts are oil to Jazzfanz water.

The funny part is that his new username just as appropriate as the original "Mission Accomplished" declaration by Pres. Bush.

I don't necessarily agree with all of KOC's moves, especially losing Matthews, but he saved the franchise by trading Deron, because you know Deron would've been gone the next season and without the trade, the Jazz would be looking at a bleak future. He also made some other smart moves, drafting fairly well (though the verdict is still out on Kanter), getting Tinsley and Carroll to support the bench, and his roster additions this season. He tried to compensate for losing Matthews by signing Raja. It looked like a good signing at the time, but as it turned it would've been good only if you could've turned back the clock five years for Raja because he's clearly finished as a player.
