Agreed. I don't understand why so many here want to see him go.i love how everybody talks as though a guy can do so much damage to a franchise (ours or the spurs) from the position of 3rd or 4th assistant. the job of an assistant is to help prepare players for game day, counsel the coach, identify opponents' schemes... there's nothing there layden doesn't have the ability to do and do well, and fwiw i have heard he's one of the hardest working assistant coaches around. it's not like he's the key decision-maker on anything that really affects team quality... his job is to work with players and get them ready for games.

The Damage he could do to the Jazz with their loyalty could be devastating. They have a tendency to promote from within and be loyal to guys that don't deserve it. hell right now he may be in line to be a future coach for the Jazz. That would be a worst case senario for me. I'd rather not have a guy I view as pretty much worthless moving up in this organization.
So even being an assistant I don't want that guy remaining with the franchise if we have a way out.
eh, i'm not seeing the jazz make a guy head coach who isn't head coach material just because he's been around longer. i mean, ty brought in sydney lowe to be the first assistant, despite scotty and jeff being holdovers from the sloan era. how does that jive with the loyalty-trumps-all philosophy?
loyalty is a good value to have, but at the end of the day, the NBA is a meritocracy... which is why the jazz traded d-will, salary-dumped memo, let AK walk, and didn't seriously pursue boozer as an UFA. those were pretty much the four faces of the franchise, but the jazz decided to go a different direction and so "loyalty" lost out. i just can't see them making a move that big out of "loyalty." if that was the case, gordy chiesa would be head coach right now.

New blood is good everyone and a while.
*every once in a while ??
Because it was not the organization that chose the assistant coaches. It was a coach. The organization hired Ty despite there being better options out there who had a lot more coaching experience and pedigree.eh, i'm not seeing the jazz make a guy head coach who isn't head coach material just because he's been around longer. i mean, ty brought in sydney lowe to be the first assistant, despite scotty and jeff being holdovers from the sloan era. how does that jive with the loyalty-trumps-all philosophy?

A little off topic but just wanted to say I love Gordy (Chiesa) I know he works for the NBA in some capacity to help train future coaches (like a coaches coach) as well as he's getting old so realistically it wouldn't make sense anyway. Just always wondered why he left and wanted him back he just seemed like a good people person and a good buffer between players and coaches, a "glue" guy that helped everybody.
Yeah, going back over your posts I can see all the love you've been showing for the above mentioned guys. I look forward to the season when you'll stop being so soft on them... or not.i don't know, often times i find the opposite to be true... in the off-season everything is perfect on paper and you're not bound by reality when assessing the team or the possibilities.
then as soon as the season starts you get back to having an actual body of work to pick apart and you realize that cj is still shooting 39%, earl is still playing with a single-digit PER, al jefferson still has never made physical contact with a defender in his life, hayward still looks in 33-50% of his games like he's just waiting to get home and play halo, etc.
maybe it's different for coaches, but around here, people are a lot more positive about players during the off-season.

"If you chance to meet a frown, do not let it stay. Quickly turn it upside down and smile that frown away."that's exactly why i say it. because everybody has been talking about how perfectly assembled our roster is and i still see a ton of problems. a point guard who doesn't play point guard, a center who doesn't defend, and a bunch of guys who we're banking on their potential. could be an amazing year if EVERYTHING goes right, but how many times does EVERYTHING go right for an NBA team over the course of an 82-game season?
