How much do you tip?

I posted a video of the tipping scene but thought better of it. Anyway, youtube is your friend.

UGLI don't care what Reservoir Dogs say, he's still tippin.

It's a classic scene. Steve Buscemi is the non-tipper. Everyone else is giving him **** for it.

I'm very sorry the government taxes their tips, that's ****ed up. That ain't my fault. It would seem to me that waitresses are one of the many groups the government ****s in the *** on a regular basis. Look, if you ask me to sign something that says the government shouldn't do that, I'll sign it, put it to a vote, I'll vote for it, but what I won't do is play ball. And as for this non-college ******** I got two words for that: learn to ****in' type, 'cause if you're expecting me to help out with the rent you're in for a big ****in' surprise.

There's some self-reliant conservative in you yet!

I usually tip 20%, a little less if the service is really bad. Take-out is tough. I tip usually a dollar for take-out from The Philadelphian on my $8 order. I've never tipped the dish guy. Am I supposed to?

Anyway, a number of years ago I went to a restraurant that I thought was Beto's style only to find out that it was a sit-down. I decided I'd sit, since I was already there. The girl asked me for my drink and never brought it. She asked what she could get for me later and I said my drink. At least three other times I asked her for my drink. Never came. I went to the front to pay (she was the cashier) and she asked if I wanted to leave a tip on the card, to which I told her no. Later I checked my statement and she had applied a tip.

Edit: also failed to mention that I was the only person in the restaurant.

It's a personal choice. I don't always tip the Directv guy. If they're just hooking up my receiver, I'm probably not tipping. But a month ago, my reception was spotty because I had my roof re-shingled and it loosened the dish. They sent a guy out to fix it and instead of simply fixing it, he hooked me up with a lot of newer stuff that made my existing system work even better and he didn't charge me to replace the stuff. He even got up in my attic to reconfigure some stuff and took his 30 minute service call to about 3 hours and left my house after 6pm. I was thrilled and more than happy to kick in some money to buy him and his wife (who called about 10 times to see when he'd be home) dinner.

If you came to my house for electrical work and really did a great job and did some unexpected stuff, you'd get a dinner out of it.

Next time you need electrical work, call me.

Man I should open a restaurant. People come in and buy my food and then they have to pay my employess wages for me too...........

I don't. I am just a student. Why should I tip when I can eat somewhere else with that money. But yeah %20 thing seems right.

And why getting a server position is so competitive and turnover is so low.

One last interesting tidbit when it comes to working in a restaurant....

Whether you're a manager, busser, server, etc....

Breaks.

On weekends and holidays you rarely get breaks. Often, restaurants will have nearly their entire staff (all managers, cooks, etc) on. That means, that often the guys who open are still on even until later at night. At popular restaurants employees can work between 8-14 hrs. I know of a few servers who have even hit the 15 hr mark. mangers typically can find some time to get a break in the "dead" part of the weekend/holiday between 3-5. It still sucks because I'm sure they'd rather be with their families instead of crapping away an entire fri/sat/sun/2/3/3of3 away. However... Your underlings often do not have that luxury. Many might get a 10-15 hr "break" to hurry and stuff some bread, soup, salad, or soup down before they have to get back to work.

This might sound harsh... And it is... It sucks... But that's what restaurant employees go through.

A year or so ago when I worked on a restaurant on Saturdays, I typically worked 10-13 hrs on Saturday without any break. It sucked.

We helped to prep the food, served during our shifts, and then had to clean up the restaurant.

Most of your college kids working these shifts do so because they need them. What alternative is there? Working a damn telemarketing job? Many take out student loans too. So it's not like you can support yourself or your family with these jobs. And not everyone uses student loans to go chill with friends in Hawaii or Vegas.

Oh, and doing that prep work isn't a change in salary. For the time spent doing prep work they're still only making $2.13 an hr. So if they are required to be 30 mins or an hr or 2 hrs early, they essentially work for free... Same thing when cleaning the restaurant.
Again, you may want to consider these things next time you're in a restaurant.

20-25%

What does everyone tip sandwich delivery drivers?

I've never had a sandwich delivered to me, but probably the same.

I tipped our taxi driver 25% yesterday because he had some major road rage and it scared me.

Also consider the fact that a lot of servers have to tip out.

I worked at a restaurant where we had to tip out 30%, which was complete bull since I was bussing, hosting, serving, and prepping some of the food
