What's new

Why doesn't infraction lead to decreased Rep power?

We never inform the person reporting it of the result.

I'm aware, but this thread is about rep (which -- seriously -- I don't care about accruing, but I'll contribute to the discussion here with the hope for any change with the system, maybe even removal).

This is a clear case of Cy using rep power to bully. At the worst, he did it for as long as he could (i.e. until he purposefully grated on my last nerve so that I reported something) and got a warning out of it. His rep (i.e. his power to bully) wasn't touched, nor was my rep (i.e. my ability to not be bullied by him) restored.

This is an example. Make of it what you will.

Your rep power has nothing to do with your "ability to not be bullied by him". It doesn't matter how much rep a person has if they are being "bullied". The only thing that affects is your ability to "bully" him back. You could make a case for reducing a person's rep for abusing it.
This is only one more reason I feel rep is becoming a bigger PIA than it's worth.

My take is rep power does have some value. When one takes the time to make a post others enjoy it is somewhat gratifying (at least I think it is) to be repped for it.
Where it may become exhausting is if/when repping is more political (whether good or bad) than rep-worthy.
Honestly, I think this whole thread is silly. If rep is silly, then arguing about it is even sillier.

Well, brother, that is seriously debatable. Very un-nuanced view from you. This is a case-by-case issue. At the time, Cy was clearly motivated by rep, and my inability to hit back as hard as he was hitting was definitely leading to the behavior. And its perpetuity.

You could make a case for reducing a person's rep for abusing it.

Glad you've finally arrived here. I particularly like the emphasis on abandoning rep.

Send a PM. Old skill. I know, right?

Most this rep bitching is nothing more than the old hard *** routine circle jerk being jealous that a new, funnier group has displaced them from atop the rep leader board.

Maybe it would help if it was more concentrated. This version is way too spread out.

I also prefer the old anon system much more and predicted these problems when that was taken away. I never gave neg rep when it when it was anonymous but thought it was fun to puzzle together the haters sending it my way.

Just get rid of negging. Negging seems dumb.

Pos repping is BAWSE and the only reason I get out of bed in the morning

Also, some of y'all are weird.

I'll assume I'm not included in your comment about the old dynamics since I've never topped the rep board or been overly active. Cy definitely went from numero uno to numero mierda ungracefully, so you are onto something there.

Getting rid of neg would be an acceptable conclusion.

I like the reputation system because I like being able to rep posts that I find particularly helpful, find funny, or learn something from. However, If the reputation system somehow leads to "cyber bullying," something needs to change or the bully needs to be removed. If this website's intentions are to be a family friendly website, cyber bullying should not be allowed.

That's my two cents into the conversation.

So now I agree. However, this has a whole different tone than the OP. This is about bad behavior and not about simply posters with high rep.

No it's definitely not about posters with high rep. There are plenty of good posters with high rep who doesn't abuse it. All I'm saying is that if you do abuse it (high rep or not), your rep power should take a hit, simply because you have abused it.

Yes Yes Yes, PKM if you wanted an example, you've got one.

When I was a new poster to this place Cy was definitely one of those who would just neg rep you -20 simply for messing with his mood. (I wouldn't be surprised if he'd neg rep me for this post, but who cares). I toughed it out, took it on the chin, because I enjoy 90% of the discussions I have here.

Which other new posters have Cy done this to? We'll never know. Should he be penalized for this sort of behavior? Absolutely. Why he's still walking around with 27+ Rep is beyond me.

To the Mods: not all new posters are going to report this kind of thing. It can come out as whiny and most people just don't wanna bother. (For all my time here I've never reported a neg-rep be it bully in nature or otherwise). So if you can't monitor this, I think it's pretty stupid. If you have a Rep system going, you've got to be able to monitor it. If you can't, then you've got to take it out IMO.

Yes same here. It needs to be better managed though.

Yes, thank you.

NOBODY actively tracks reps given, positive or negative. I don't think anybody would want that job, either. That would literally make me want to rip my eyeballs out.

It's not really that hard, have your system generate a list of posters who repeatedly give out Neg Rep (say top 20 for the last week) and look into what they are (if the system allows you to do that), then assess whether those Neg Rep are bully in nature or not. If so you get penalized for it with a Reduction in Rep Power of say 5 for the 1st warning, 5 for the 2nd warning, and 10 for the 3rd warning.

Thank you, because I have never used leverage in any way whatsoever.

I say we sticky a neg-rep thread in General or this forum. That way the community can determine whether the negs are abusive and act accordingly. I can tell you I have been approached 4 separate times (4 separate posters) about joining in a neg rep campaign against another poster. In each case, not only did I refrain, but advised against the campaign altogether.

I think rep can be fun and certainly has its upside. Douche posters will be douches regardless the rules .. so let's just all ban together and not stand for complete douchiness... though being a little douche, every now and then, can be way fun. Just don't let it get out of hand.

4 dudes trying to fight fire with fire. Correction: stupid fire with stupid fire. I don't expect you'll share the details, but something tells me Cy and Trout motivated all 4 instances. Two posters with plenty of infractions.
