This is why it baffles me a bit why they are not playing Favors and Hayward more. Do you want to gamble with these guys since there are many question marks as to how good they are? Teams with mediocre players constituting the largest portion of their salary space do not win a lot of games. Why not give them as great a chance to show what they can do unless you're trying to limit their development so you can get them at a cheaper price. They need to quit pussyfooting around and either go with the vets or youth and that includes trades for whichever one they don't choose. We'll see what they do by February.

+1

It's completely moranic to think Hayward is worth only 8 million. He can play offense and defend, and you think he should get only half of what Al is making! No one will be able to sign him for just 8 million. I'd kill to get him at 12 million.

This statement has much truth to it except for the killing I hope.

I can imagine the situation now: "Gordo, we're willing to go up to 8.9/year but that's where we stop. We acknowledge that you were the youngest player among the top 12 shooting guards in PER. We also acknowledge that you had similar numbers/36 to James Harden when he was your age, and we are men enough to say that you led our team in points/36 but weren't given the minutes to fully blossom. Nevertheless, see what the market will offer you, Wesley...oh...I mean Gordon."

Result = no way in hell he is signed for under nine million if he continues his promising play. Then what do the Jazz do? In a certain sense, the Jazz have to sign Hayward, so they better develop him!

Well you have to hope that Gordon takes it as loyalty rather than hedging. After all, you're talking about a pretty substantial raise next year and guaranteeing him set for life without worrying about injuring himself next year as he auditions for a bigger contract.

But yea IMO you gotta extend this guy as early as possible same as Favs. I'd start with 9M for G and 11 for Favs. IMO those offers are not insulting.

11 million but think KOC goes up to 12 because he really likes him and proved everyone oh so wrong that booed him on draft night. His third year numbers are currently superior to Batum's third year numbers who is at 11m/year.

Once Al is gone I see his pay scale going way up. I also hope he is put back into the starting lineup so he can at least get 30 min's consistently. I want him to have more reasons to stay loyal and can see him taking a little less to stay in Utah. But Foy consistently getting more minutes is so stupid!! TyCo needs to wake his *** up and realize Foye is nothing mor then a three point specialist playing 15-18 minutes a game.

There's that as well. Anyone know how Haywards numbers compare to Hardens third year, and know how many minutes Harden averaged in his third coming off the bench?

Damn homeboy is gonna make more than 8 mill per year. Well who knows. I would love to extend him at that price.

Of course this issue is one more very good reason to make as deep a run as possible. If he disappears again in the postseason maybe not so much.

I just have no idea which Hayward is going to show up on a given night. And his physical profile is less than elite. I don't know. I hate thinking about stuff like this.

How about this, take advantage of how moody he is and when he's down after a bad game one night, pitch $7 million starting on a 4-year.

Matt Harpring money? Like Mid-level-ish? Seriously? Dude's a way better defender, more efficient scorer, better playmaker, and only 22-years-old.

Do y'all actually think he could possibly be locked up for less than $8mm per season this summer?

FWIW, I picked the $9mm - $9.9mm option, although I wouldn't freak out over an extension a little over $10mm per. Nic Batum got about $11.5mm per year on his extension.

I would say something in the Batum range.

Therefore I have a hard time visualizing Hayward getting an offer much more than $7-8 million/year, and so I voted for choice A.

* This could change by the end of the season, but that's where I think he is right now. If it changes, then I'll change my vote.

Smart man. I was trying to say the same thing and then GVC jumped all over me like I was a hot girl in a naughty outfit.

I don't think the Jazz front office would even blink at giving Hayward 12 mil. And I think he might be worth up to 14 mil. Much like Wes Matthews, Hayward may not be worth that amount early in his contract but I think he could grow into it.
The more Hayward has the ball in his hands, the more confidence he gets. Most importantly, he makes his teammates better.

There is something we need to understand about the new CBA: because it is so expensive to go into the luxury now, teams are not going to want to pay as much for players but stars are still going to get paid. I remember reading during the lockout about how the middle value players would suffer the most because the 'Kobes' would still be getting theirs and the rookies would get their guaranteed contracts but the middle talent guys would get less to keep teams under the cap. Gordon is no 'Kobe', at least not yet for sure and you can't have ten 10 mil per year guys on an under the cap team.

If you paid all of the players that we have right now what they think they are worth, how much would it be? Millsap: 15 Al: 15 Favors: 15 Kanter: 10 hayward: 10 Marvin: 10 Mo: 10 Burks: 5 Foye: 5 Roger: 35 (just kidding) The rest are scrubs, but that's close to 90 mil. And that's without a current all star. The new market of the NBA is a 'big 3' getting near max contracts and the rest getting midlevel deals, and nobody on our current roster is at 'big 3' level so they can't be getting over 10 mil. That includes Gordon, and frankly Favors though he may get more due to his size.

As people have already pointed out, many players have already been signed with an eye to the new CBA such as Batum. There is also always a disconnect between what is theoretically appropriate and what is reality. Player after player get over-payed and the Jazz are in no position to dictate. They have no "big three" as you have pointed out, so where do they get them? Answer, they don't (unless it's from within), so they will pay the players that they have or truly become abysmal. The other alternative is trade, particularly this year when they have the most assets.

Hate to be a downer, but if overall non star player salaries don't come down then the Jazz are in trouble because I guarantee that they won't be paying triple to the dollar luxury fees for a non championship team.

There is a good side to this because if they stay under the cap than the kickback from other teams will help a lot.

If the Jazz can sign useful players to reasonable contracts, they can always be moved when someone shows up or is available via trade to take their spot. The Harden trade is a perfect example of this (for both teams involved).
