1st post! been a lurker here for long enough, i plan on keeping this thread alive with daily updates, and I wont post anywhere else(i will mention other threads in here tho). obviously things derail, but id really like to focus on when Burks is playing point.
Let me explicitly state im no expert on burks, im not some closet colorado fan, i do watch every jazz game and saw all of his summer league games.
lets start with a few presuppositions
- Burks is 3 months older then michael carter-williams. 1 inch taller and has a 6'10 wingspan. MCW (according to DX) has a wingspan of 6'5 and burks is about 20lbs heavier, a vastly superior athlete, especially if u judge it on fluidity, and is not a shoplifter. MCW obviously has a more old school PG skillset (we shall see how that translates to playing point in the league tho) hes also way less goofy looking
-Burks isnt a Floor General, never will be, hes what Steve Nash calls a 'Super Guard' (nash was referring to D.Rose and Westbrook). the most important thing is, will he be able to break down the defense?(yes) then once the defense is broken, make the right decision.(by the time he masters this you'll love him already). for most super guards the right descision is to draw a foul or finish more often than pass, if you view this as a bad thing, so be it.
-when you start to consider him as a PG hes basically the biggest since Livingston. youl notice his center of gravity and most importantly his dribble are very low for those oversized PG's(wingspan related?) i can really only think of Tyreke Evans(who for all his faults does dribble ridiculously low) burks has an infinitely better attitude, and displays a penchant for realizing when he did something dumb, unlike Evans
-kids a natural getting to the rack, also from the perspective of him as a PG hes a natural at slashing/playing off the ball (yall know. some young pg's look totally clueless without the ball)
-his numbers are in no way flashy as of right now and may never shoot the greatest FG%.... but to me, he looks like the type of scorer who can get half of his PPG from the freethrow line... (like mike)
-Burks Pre-draft Measurements are eerily similar to John Wall's (lane agility, 3/4 court sprint) the biggest difference is burks standing reach is 2inches more and wall has 3 more inches of vertical
-because of his size hes one of the few PGs you will see off the ball setting screens. that smells like utah jazz basketball to me, stockton used to set screens like a BOSS, im certsin someone has shown him those vids. tonight against the bulls he was setting screens right in the middle of the paint.
-hes hungry but young, hangs his head alittle too much for my liking, but the fact is hes learning a brand new position(that hes oversized for) u gotta cut him some slack... watching his limited crunch time minutes really inclines me to believe there's some hidden MASSIVE UPSIDE.
-Alec wasnt a 5star HS recruit, not even 4star, Rivals had him as 3star, not even in their top 35 sgs in the '08 class. behind names you know like Marcus Denmon, Reggie Jackson, Kim English, Rotnei Clarke, Travis Releford, Mike Rosario, J'covan Brown, Derozan, William Buford Scotty Hopson and Klay Thompson and many no names... in just 2 years he progressed to the 13th pick in the draft. (think its safe to say hes got plenty of upside at a new position)
one of the main reasons why i made an account to discuss Burks, is the Incoming 2013 PG class and some of the hysteria ive seen on this board relating to it. if we reach for any of these PG's ima be fuuuurious(especially if Goodwin, Olapido, or Otto Porter or KOC's BPA are on the board). when the trey burke brigade arrives, id like to ask you not tell me how his demeanor is or skillsets, why hes better than the other college point guards or player comparisons (the same things in the Draft thread), im much more interested in this; How does he stack up against the top 20pgs in the league(furthermore the ability to not get absolutely destroyed by the top 5pgs), do you think he will be effective vs them? id like to explore this with Burks moving forward too.
im gonna steamroll this thread like im talking to myself or building evidence and i just want it dated out & in the open for all to see, for a big i told u so at a later point in time, please join in on the fun!
Rany D Foye broke down the defense way better than Burks did last night.
I will just say that there was about a half dozen play last night from Burks that I was very impressed with. They were PG type plays.
His defense was great on Robinson too.
I wish he would take it to the rim more. I have been waiting for a jaw dropping play from him since he started getting so much playing time.
I have been waiting for a jaw dropping play from him too...... The closest thing he did lately was the "houdini" play were he split the defenders and double pumped under the big down low for a layup.
