Best/Worst song covers...

Inspired by Moe's bad song thread, I want to know what song covers you love and hate.

As franklin pointed out, Dolly Parton did a hideous STH cover. Also, I've always disliked Social Distortion's Ring of Fire cover.

Good covers (IMO) include The Ataris - Boys of Summer, The Clash - I Fought the Law, and Metallica - Whiskey in the Jar.

"Beat It" by Fallout Boy & John Mayer is a well-executed MJ cover.

"Behind Blue Eyes" by Limp Bizkit has to be on the top 10 "worst" list.

You don't like Social D's "Ring of Fire"? Ouch. I thought it was a decent version.

The best covers are the ones in which the song goes from the original artist to being associated with the covering artist: Aretha's "Respect", the Beatles' "Twist and Shout", Jimi's "All Along the Watchtower", and Cash's "Hurt". These are so good it's easy to forget that they are covers.

Bad covers are songs that make you want to stick a q-tip deep into your ear drum. Anything by Michael Bolton in the late 80's fits this. Playing his blasphemous version of "When a Man Loves a Woman" has replaced waterboarding as a way to get suspected terrorists to give information.

Jimi's AATW is the greatest cover of all time and its not even close.

GWAR's version of Kansas' Carry on My Wayward Son.....

and it's not even close.

A7X has an awesome live cover of Pantera's Walk that's mildly not family site friendly. It'd be awesome if they could do their own version of the song for an album. Would be so much better than Pantera.

One of my personal favorite covers is The Gourds' version of Snoop's "Gin and Juice". Not even remotely linkable on this site, but if you don't mind a bomb or twenty, check it out.

I've never thought too highly of it, but in fairness, there are probably hundreds of covers that are worse.

I had forgotten about AATW. That is a brilliant cover. Dylan is (was) a talented songwriter, but I always prefer covers of his songs to his originals.

I can only tolerate listening to a few Dylan songs, when Dylan is the one playing them.

I was just going to post this but will have to settle for Michael Jackson himself. Who does this one piss off?

That's horrible.

Aerosmith did a pretty good cover of that song.

Also Lynard Skynard - Crossroads, Godsmack's Rocky Mountain Way, Dropkick Murphy's Fortunate Son, and Young Dubliners If I Should Fall from Grace with God are some of my favorites
