Soccer referee in coma after being punched by unhappy teenager player.

I don't think there is much hope for this kid in society. Anyone who would punch another person possibly to death has shown they are a total menace. It wouldn't bother me at all if he spends his life until his 40s in prison, and hopefully by then all the testosterone will be out of his system and maybe then he'll be less of a danger to society.

I've punched people in the head on about a dozen different occasions...as a juvenile. I've never punched another person as an adult. I disagree that it is a clear sign that this kid is a worthless human being.

People are not clockwork organisms, afterall.

Did any of them die?

He punched a guy. That's what he did. I guess every 17 year old male who ever punches anyone should be summarily executed because they are clearly a lost cause?

So!?

Why is under population a risk?

I say the more people executed, the better!

If it causes people to think twice before they do stupid things, awesome! All while we use population control. And since everyone involved was Hispanic, repubs should love this too. The kid was probably an anchor baby. With this kid locked up for the next 40 years why not deport his family now? This needs to serve as a wake up call to our Utah Latino community.

Oh, btw; the dead father was uninsured. Who is going to pay for their medical bills and funeral?

Yet, we are worried about the kid's future???? About the murderer's life!???

Give me a break.

I get so tired of the senseless violence driven by kids and their annoying parents in sports. They thrive on society's understanding and compassion today. I say, try the kid as an adult. Did he mean to kill anybody? Surely not. But that doesn't bring this poor man back to his family. Did he mean to do harm? Absolutely.

These leagues are notorious for their violence. This isn't the first time a ref got hurt here. The difference is, no one would have known about this had he just escaped with a bloody nose or black eye. If anything, this can serve as an example to the Latin community here. Soccer is important, sure. But it's time to tone it down a notch.

Here in America we seem to look in horror at cases like the malice in the palace between Indiana and Detroit a few years back. True, it was bad. Yet, we don't understand that this type of thing happens nearly weekly in central and South America. It's time to wake up. Latinos here in Utah, time to clean up your sport. 17 year old murderer, time to own up to your mistake. You killed someone. 40+ years at the point of the Mtn is a start.

Hey thriller, what's your mom doing with Al Jefferson?

Just a side note, a few years ago in a game between highland and cottonwood high schools, a bunch of polys and Hispanics ganged up on a poor sophomore/jv player who was taking a leak during the varsity game. They forcibly broke his leg and screwed up his knee.

There is no fear of punishment. They knew that they'd get off with a slap on the wrist. Time to step up our punishments. Better think long and hard before acting like this kid.

Anyone got a gif of Ace Ventura saying "WHEW?"

You got lucky. Punching people in the head is russian roulette. Though I'm guessing at least you were in a fight where they knew a possible punch was coming. When you're unprepared to take a punch the likelyhood of injury skyrockets, especially when you punch a person in the head.

Well I was always short and skinny growing up (people always called me "skinny bones" as a taunt) so people often made the mistake of thinking I was an easy target. I had a three warning rule where is tell them to leave me alone then I'd punch them in the face. Can't remember one time where my plea to be left alone was respected. I also can't remember as single time when someone tried to **** with me again after I punched them in the face.

"Portillo's oldest daughter says it wasn't the first time a soccer player assaulted her father. Johana Portillo says the referee has had ribs and legs broken by players angry with his calls."

What the hell ? Doesn't this seem very unusual?
Wow! If this happened in this particular league, then the league needs to be disbanded IMMEDIATELY. As for the father, why in the hell was he still reffing? If players had done that to me, I'd no longer be reffing. And it would be interesting to hear if any of the other boys had been punished for these previous assaults. If not, and the assaults had occurred in this league, the league is partly to blame for Portillo's death.

Unusual to some Americans? Yes.

Unusual for Latin America soccer leagues here in America? Nope.

One should visit these fields across the street from Provo high and the hospital on weekends. Latino leagues play there. There are always a few fights and tons of garbage left all over the place. In Latin America, this type of behavior is acceptable. No pride is taken in caring for public facilities, trashing the field is a given, and fights is almost a requirement. Anyone who has visited central or South America knows this to be true.

What we saw in Detroit a few years back is what countries down south see every single week. Here in Utah we freaked out a few years ago when a few fans threw water bottles at the refs after a bad game. In central and South America? They throw flares, torches, balloons filled with urine, and batteries.

I hope it serves as a wake up call for those in our community. Unfortunately, I'm pretty sure in a week or two it will be business as usual.
