...How did the coach even know about this?
from the article:
...Both girls played on the school basketball team, but Hunt was booted from the team when the coach learned about the relationship, according to Hunt’s mother.
The coach also contacted the younger girl's family, who successfully urged the school to expel Hunt. They formally pressed charges shortly afterward...
So perhaps the coach walked in on them doing something, or some teammates witnessed something and told the coach? At any rate, it seems the coach informed the parents.
That's the crux of the issue for me. A 14 year old can't give informed consent because he/she does not have the maturity needed. Especially when an older partner is involved.
If my daughter were the 14 year old, I cannot even imagine what my reaction would be. And this has nothing to do with the homosexual aspect of the situation.
...But I still believe this is only happening because it's a same sex situation.
The parents could very well have that as their motive for deciding to go ahead and press charges. Of course, the prosecution is going to deny it's at all gender related - whether or not they believe it is another matter entirely.
I think what I have the most trouble understanding in a situation like this is why would the parents of the younger girl want to put her through something like this? Just makes no sense to me.
