So perhaps the coach walked in on them doing something, or some teammates witnessed something and told the coach? At any rate, it seems the coach informed the parents.

That's the crux of the issue for me. A 14 year old can't give informed consent because he/she does not have the maturity needed. Especially when an older partner is involved.

If my daughter were the 14 year old, I cannot even imagine what my reaction would be. And this has nothing to do with the homosexual aspect of the situation.

...But I still believe this is only happening because it's a same sex situation.

The parents could very well have that as their motive for deciding to go ahead and press charges. Of course, the prosecution is going to deny it's at all gender related - whether or not they believe it is another matter entirely.

I think what I have the most trouble understanding in a situation like this is why would the parents of the younger girl want to put her through something like this? Just makes no sense to me.

As a teacher, I find this ridiculous. Age of consent rules seems to reflect the fact that those making them couldn't get laid in high school. Having sex at 14 or 15 is pretty freaking normal. If it's not, I've taught nothing but criminals and deviants.

Because kids talk loudly about this sort of stuff in the hallway and in the cafeteria. Because you see them holding hands in the hallway and I don't break it up like some people would expect me to do. Because you coach sports and boys will even tell you, let alone their teammates on the bus. Because 4-5 times a semester, you will have some student go into absolute break-down mode over something their significant other has done and cause a public scene.

Good grief, I'm a teacher and I care. How the hell would I not know if my students are dating one another? It's not like they hide it. It's not a religious school or anything.
