Tiago Splitter - Exhibit A on what the Jazz SHOULD NOT draft

Is there any other big in the league that gets blocked by guards more than Splitter? Is there any other center in the league that is easier to match up against than Splitter.

We need to draft people that have length and athleticism.

I know this could be a totally different situation in the NBA, but I was quite surprised to see that of Euroleague centers, Tomic has one of the lowest percentages for having his shot blocked.

... but he has yet to play in the NBA.

Splitter is a great back up big. Even though he gets blocked a lot he is still effective on both ends of the court. Not a great player but a decent role player. I think he should be coming off the bench to play against back ups. Where he can dominate with size. Most teams don't have back up big men who are Splitters size.

Agreed we need more athletic players. But Splitter is pretty decent in terms of using his body well. I think he is a poor man's Kanter.

Sidenote: I think you will see Kanter win the MOST IMPROVED AWARD next year. Averaging 17-18 points per game, 11 rebounds and 1 Block a game. And he will do it playing just a little over 30 minutes a game.

I've watched a lot of basketball games. I really do mean a lot. With that said, I've never seen someone get blocked as much as, Enes Kanter.

Also Mike Miller is not athletic and is effective. Same with Shane Battier, Gary Neal, and Udonis Haslem.

One bad game doesn't equal someone being a bad player. Chris Anderson is athletic but he doesn't always play well and gets blocked also.

I honestly didn't see Kanter get blocked that much this past year. 2 years ago I thought he did a ton. But he improved a lot. He still got blocked every once in awhile but that is the chance you take when you are taking it to the paint constantly. Nobody does that anymore but the fact is Kanter was hitting at a high percentage and a lot of the times he would get the rebound after being blocked and put it back up. Kanter is old school and doesn't care if it doesn't look good if he gets blocked here and there. The new guys of today are scared to make contact and just get up a lot of shots. They have become volume shooters and never get to the foul line.
Hopefully Karl Malone can help him out also. Karl was the master at getting his shot off even though he couldn't jump in his years where they made the finals even. But he rarely got blocked. Karl knew how to use his body so it wouldn't happen. Kanter is a lot taller also so I think he could really dominate if Karl can show him those tricks.

I looked into the stat also. Found a website that shows who gets blocked the most. I thought it would be unfair to only look at players who have the highest total since Kanter only played 15 minutes per game. So I did a per 40 to see who gets blocked the most.

(Any player that played over 10 minutes per game. Kanter played 13 in 11-12 and 15 in 11-12)

In 2011 - Kanter was getting blocked 15% of the time for 4th worst in the NBA
In 2012 - Kanter was getting blocked 11% of the time for 25th worst in the NBA

He is in company of Ty Lawson, Greg Monroe, Cousins, Faried, Pekovic. That are near his percentage. Does he need to improve still. Yes for sure. He is not perfect. But I see improvement in all areas of his game. And he shot a better percentage last year than all of those guys also except Faried who shot 55%.

You also have to take into effect his shooting percentage and free throw percentage.
FG%
49% in 11-12 and 54% in 12-13

FT%
66% in 11-12 and 79% in 12-13

54% is incredible also. It will go down a little next year because he will be playing against Starters more often but it shows he can keep it above 50% which is usually the elite class of the league. On top of free throws which most big men don't get.

Yes, getting shots blocked may not be unimportant, but it's got to be one of the least important stats out there. Efficiency (which both Kanter and Splitter have) is far, far more important.

Blocks and Dunks are overrated in basketball. They are the home run type plays that get fans excited but really how many blocks are recorded each game and a dunk is still two points. Now they certain can change momentum in a game but mostly fans love them for their poster shots.

I still want Tiago over Almond. Tiago is a solid role player and every person who has played basketball has gotten his shot blocked.

wtf does that have to do with anything? Big Al is the worst thing to ever happen to me. Ever.

Ding ding. Trading Al for Splitter is a lot different than overpaying Splitter as a FA.

That being said, is SA up 3-1 if they would have traded Splitter for Al? Al would have been a much better player for SA, especially against Miami and their weak front line.

Interesting.

Look up Locke's stats on Splitter. The Spurs defense is far more superior with him on the floor.

Yup. Splitter even defended Wade to start last nights game and held him to 2 points while he was guarding him.

Can't answer about guards blocking it but if we look at total blocked attempts Splitter's shot got blocked at 13.7% rate in last season. Worst rate from bigs who played significant minutes was Reggie Evans - 18.7, then Rony Turiaf 18.6 and then Omer Asik at 14.6. Our own hope Enes Kanter was in top 8 last year with 15.3% rate but this year he made good improvement and is down to 11.1% ( still leading the Jazz though).
