What's new

Salary Cap = $58.679M

So, the NBA trade window opens before the cap is announced? Who the hell came up with that?

Sign Michael Stockton and throw it all at him in a 1yr tryout deal! We can do that right? I mean, he's a college graduate / German pro, so we can sign him to whatever we wanted?

Maybe we could get John to come over and be the PG coach. Have the trinity of Jerry, John and Karl beseeching the basketball gods on our behalf.

Seriously though, as a Westminster graduate, I've seen him play --he's good, and gotten better.

I bet Utah was waiting to see this number before signing their third pg. Now they know exactly how much to throw at Tinsley or a similar player.

I think most of us were thinking the cap was going to be about $54.5M.

Consensus around the NBA for months has been that it would be just north of $58mm, exactly as it came out. There was no point in waiting to find the exact dollar figure to the penny.

I'm not sure how a few of us came up with the $54.5, but I do remember reading that with the GS trade, which brought us to $49.6M in salaries, IINM, the Jazz had approximately $4.8M left to spend under the cap. Perhaps it was a typo that many of us just ran with as we actually have $8M+.

I think Utah would and should divide that $3+m over two players, maybe three.
I think we'll go with 2 players, leaving a roster spot open for trades. Jazz traditionally have preferred going with 14 players. Of course, nothing is "traditional" any more with Lindsey in command. Gobert looks like he's ready for some minutes behind Kanter and Evans certainly deserves some at PF. Plus we now have Biedrins. Bigs are set unless the Jazz see something they really like in a SL player. Jazz do need another PG and I bet they also sign a wing. With Marvin still out and Rush coming back from a major injury, they're thin with only Burks, Hayward and Jefferson. My predictions would be bringing Tinsley back for 1 yr/$2.5M and then a SL wing for the remaining amount.

Jazz have $10mm left? I wonder if that's enough to pick up another 1st rounder. They can always sign vet minimums for backup point guard.

Haha! The goal is to spend up to the floor so they can get luxury tax money back, not up to the full cap.

Uh...no?

Stein tweeted an expected 58.5 in early June. He was 175K off.

Trade brought the Jazz to right around 53.75M

Jazz have, therefore, just under 5 mil to spend.

That's not how it works. In the new revenue pool, receiving teams are limited to $10,000,000 in profits. If the Jazz spend only $52mm vs $60mm, they'll essentially get $8mm less in payments from the league (all else being equal). They have more incentive to spend all their cap space to acquire more assets.

The exception to this would be if they weren't profitable at a $52mm payroll, which I highly doubt as they've ran in the black for years according to all reports. In addition, if they aren't profitable at $52mm then they're likely not meeting revenue requirements for receiving teams, and won't be getting a distribution anyway. Also, the new revenue pool will give them up to $16mm vs. only about $5mm under the old CBA, so there's plenty to make up for the extra $7-8mm in spending.

So.. theoretically.. the Jazz could still biff the off season by throwing 5-6 mil @ Mo Williams?

Yep. Plus, if they choose to use it, the room MLE (available to teams who choose to forego other exceptions, like the regular MLE, in favor of cap space) worth $2.652mm.

I thought exceptions were only available to teams over the cap. No?
