Have "The Core Five" Turned A Corner?

They do seem like they a growing as the season goes a long.

its all so confusing conflicting.

We want to see those guys be good but we want to tank too.

Maybe the Jazz are just planning on pulling the plug once they see what they want to see. It was so bad in the beginning that I can see why they would want to see some wins for a bit. You gotta evaluate the talent and the coach to know what to do next.

While the core5 looked really good in 2014, they really didn't play together that much all season long. So there would be some growing pains and I don't think that they would win too many games from the beginning. And by the time they are winning your bench just should be really bad! If the team than by the end of the season turns all Portland it shouldn't be a problem because unlike Portland we would have one star add to that group via Draft, the GSW draft pick and as if this wasn't enough we also would have the $ to sign one or two Vets.

If you can pull the trigger just do it. There is no chemistry between the core guys that they would be good from the start and if they are good from the start...than they are even better than we thought!

Favors should block more shots.

Kanter should get more rebounds and block more shots.

Derrick is blocking 2.2% of the shots in January which would rank him 77th among PFs and Centers with +200 MIN. So you're right on that one.

Enes is rebounding 20.6% of all available boards which would rank him 5th among PFs and Centers with +200 MIN and he is blocking 2.5% of the shots in January which would rank him 68th among PFs and Centers with +200 MIN. Wrong on the rebounding part, agreed on the blocking. But he never was a great shot blocker anyway.

I'd rather our core 5 turn into above average players then tank overall this year.
This ^^^^^ and I'm a DIE-HARD tanker.

Burks IMO is the key. We knew that two top 3 big men would both be strong, but need to learn to play together. We knew that Hayward would be the face of the franchise and put into the role of #1 scoring option. We knew that Burke had the potential to be the best PG since Deron and a potential glue guy for this young squad.

Some might have known that Burks would look good driving as a starter and play well when given an opportunity. . . I wasn't one if them. I really like the idea of Hayward off the ball at SF, Burks slashing like he has lately at SG and Burke leading the charge. I think it's the best lineup even if it isn't always the best matchup.

I have faith in the Core5. I have no faith in Corbin. Give me a really good coach that appreciates them, a couple of shiny new draft picks and the cap space to buy some more assets or a bench and I think they could be competing very soon.

Yes they are turning a corner.

It's in large part up to Corbin wether or not they can continue this trend. The next few games all have matchups where Kanter should start, but who knows if Corbin will bench Marvin. After all, Marvin Williams stats for January are an incredible: 26 MPG .368 FG%, 3.8 REB, 1.8 AST, 2 PF, .8 STL, & a whopping 5.8 PTS. How could we ever survive without that? We need him to save us and show our youngins how to ball. Plus, we owe him after the leadership that he has shown.

Seriously though, Marvin is a good guy, who plays hard and through pain--but this is also a contract year for him, maybe why he is playing so hard and through pain.

When do we start owing Kanter and worrying about how benching him may psychologically affect him?

does those marv stat include years played, minutes played, games played and other various intangibles?

jus tadd those and his stats would be michael jordan like

VETS ARE GOAT'S

sick and tired of vets.

sick and tired of vets.

Under a different coach, and with a defined role. . . I'm fine with veteran players anchoring the bench.

I personally like all of the Core5 as starters, and I like Evans, Gobert and Neto as reserves. Add in the two first round picks from 2014 and maybe the 2nd round pick if he's not a draft and stash guy. There's some room for a veteran presence on this team. Just not under Corbin's leadership. He takes it too far.

hayward is already a vet in my eyes.
;)

We definitely don't have a "Core 5". We have a "Core 1", a PG who is 95% off limits, and 3 other guys could just as easily be dealt as stick around.

More accurately, we have a "Core 3" which includes Favors, Burke, and the lottery pick. That's not a value assessment of the players, it's pure salary practicality. Burke and the lottery pick can play alongside Favors at an extremely cheap price with maximum cap flexibility. Imagine having a true "Core 3" that only accounted for roughly 20 million in payroll for the next 3-4 seasons.

Hayward, Burks, and Kanter are all assets to bolster that 3. The conventional angle would be to overpay Hayward and create a Core 4 with little hope of keeping both Kanter and Burks, but eventually flipping them for future assets. The other, and in my opinion better, route to take would be to shop Hayward and spend another year evaluating Burks and Kanter before their RFA seasons.

Kanter was playing better before the SA game. After the Spurs game it's confirmed. Kanter is back on track.

With that all 5 of the young core are where we hoped going into the season. Burks is playing better. Hayward was before being injured. Favors has been steady lately.
Burke was the rookie of the month.

Yes the core 5 is playing better, and it's nice seeing all of them improve.

Karma will kick in and we will win the lottery.

@LogGrad,
"that" only means that Kanter scores and rebounds on a better rate than Favors!
so Favors has to block more? Sure! But his rebounding could be better as well.
As regards Kanter, he is already a better rebounder and scorer than Favors, given the minutes and touches!
His D?
I agree with you but he will be better, I guess.
All in all, Jazz have a duo of young good bigs, each with huge potential.
Let's cherish this, shall we?

I dont know.... does marvin get a pass on offense?
yup, he does. His stats are atrocious (sic.).
He had actually started the season very well.

In January 2014 they are averaging:

Favors - 16.2 ppg, 9.2 rpg, .2 apg, 1.0 bpg, 1 spg in 31.4 mpg

Kanter - 14.7 ppg, 7.7 rpg, .7 apg, .7 bpg, .8 spg in 22.3 mpg

Hayward - 27.0 ppg, 5.7 rpg, 5.0 apg, 1.3 bpg, 2.0 spg in 39 mpg

Burks - 15.8 ppg, 4.0 bpg, 2.8 apg, .2 bpg, .3 apg in 31.5 mpg

Burke - 13.2 ppg, 3.5 rpg, 7.3 apg, 0 bpg, .8 spg in 33 mpg

Hayward leads the team in ppg, bpg, spg and mpg.
Favors in rpg.
Burke in apg.

Have they turned a corners as individuals and a team? Thoughts?

Once again all figures are for January 2014

Definitely man I love those numbers. You know, in a team which has multiple stars or star potential players, it's very difficult for either of them to stay consistent on their numbers night in night out so I think the guys are alright on their way to make Utah a great team in the near future.
