What do you guys think about all these Mars One trip people?

A lot of local media attention lately about this. Utah has either 6, 7, or 8(I've seen all #'s recently so I don't know which one is correct) of them that made the cut to a list of 1058 being considered in the English speaking world; such as these:

In sickness and in health, in good times and bad, until Mars do us part. They weren’t exactly the marriage vows Becky Sullivan agreed to, but it’s increasingly looking like a reality.

Her husband of 5½ years, Ken Sullivan, has made the cut from more than 200,000 applicants to 1,058 for a one-way trip to settle the Red Planet as part of the Mars One project.

It’s led to some difficult conversations around the dinner table:

"The question is do we get divorced now or get divorced later," she said Sunday night in their living room. "If I stand in the way of his dreams and passions, then we get divorced now, so I have to be supportive."

Leaving behind a wife is difficult enough, but Ken Sullivan, 38, has four children ranging in age from 6 months to 13 years old.

Kitty Kane has her travel plans made, although her departure is not yet confirmed. She's hoping to take a trip to Mars, one-way. And it's not for 10 more years.

The 24-year-old Provo hairstylist has applied to be one of the first people from Earth to colonize the red planet. Initially, 200,000 turned in applications. That number has been pared down to 1,058 and she is still in the running. Seven others of those continuing on are from Utah. Organizers are planning on an international crew. Of the more than 1,000 currently in the running, almost 300 are from the United States. One of the requirements is that they all must speak English, to facilitate communication.

Selfish bass turds? The 21st century version of the great seafarers? People that are on the brink of discovering a new definition of boredom?

if this guy is ditching his wife and four kids you divorce his *** now. Also that he is leaving his kids behind should have been a disqualification.

Ya I definitely think we are really close to just sending a bunch of people up to Mars to live full time.

on the app. square bizness.

They should turn this into a global reality series and it'll could for itself. Maybe they could take the entire 200,000, then force 95% of 'em into slave mining immediately upon arrival. There's gold up in them thar red hills.

What's with the one way ticket? It's only a 6-month trip and not like they couldn't make it a 10 year mission then swap and give others a chance to "serve".

I don't know if it's really going to happen but I really hope it does. People have done a lot less with their lives than to be the first to colonize another world.

As for the guy leaving his family, I don't think it makes him a bad guy necessarily. People in the military leave their families for extended periods all the time and many of them don't come back. We applaud their sacrifice "for our freedoms." Learning how to live on multiple planets is necessary for the long term survival of our species. I think it is literally the most important thing humans could be doing at the moment.

This is gnarly! Had no idea this was goin on

It'll be interesting to see how the politics develop on Mars

i have a theory bros, that there was once an entire civiliztion on mars. and dey just died out, just like earth wil die out some day. hopefulyl one day we're gonna discover the ancient civilization from mars, and learn from these once proud people. we've already discovered that there was legit. flowing water there...a looooong *** time ago.

I've signed up for this but I was denied because my application was late a day. However they will recruit new people every two years so I will try it again. It's still a fat chance though, there will be many stages of elimination and very few people will get to the end. The later stages will be online(maybe even on TV) like a reality show and will be open to the public vote, at least that's the plan for right now.
