Cross Marcus Smart off the list of possible Jazz draft picks

The fan has come out and said he is self banning himself from attending anymore games this year.

I would say this is a case where both parties acted poorly and they will both take their lumps for it.

Should be the end of the story IMO, but I'm sure ESPN will do what they can to make this the talk of everything for the next week.

Would not be one bit surprised to see something racist or offensive thrown out there. Pro and amateur athletes take a daily heckling from fans who would never say something to their face mano y mano. I'm frankly surprised more doesn't happen more often.

I have an olive complexion and only made it as far as playing high school basketball. On road games, I'd have both students and parents calling me names repeatedly. They'd confuse me with being Spanish because they are clueless idiots (mom is from India). This forum will block most of what they would call me, but every single Mexican racial insult you can imagine was thrown at me. Never went after one, but I would literally hope those people would die on their car ride home.

I was a white kid from Utah, who played 4 positions at times, and regularly guarded the PF or took the 3 or 4 spot on zone, and then brought the ball up the court as PG. It made for some fun matchup issues and I took advantage where I could, and sometimes I was viewed as a dirty player. Obviously I was not and was just a wonderfully clean kid, angelic really. :o As a result I got called names regularly, things that I guarantee you would never hear those people say in any other context. One in particular, we had gone to the SLC to play an out of conference game. My cousins lived near there, and I wanted to spend the weekend. It was cool with my parents as long as I went to church with them on Sunday. We played Friday night and during the game I got into it with some guy that looked a little like that fan that went at Smart. He was saying some seriously vile ****, of course I amped up the dirty play because I was a smart-*** teen, and I picked up a T for holding after a made basket or something, stuff like that, but he took it to another level. I believe he used the C word and the F word flowed freely. It was genuinely fun to go to church that Sunday and see the guy stand up to conduct stake business as the high councilman apparently. I went up to the podium after and said "hey no hard feelings buddy", thanked him for his service in the church, and shook his hand. The look on his face was unbelievable. You would have thought Jesus himself had just called him out in front of the entire group during sacrament meeting for ************. Priceless.

It's true. I don't antagonize players verbally at games. I think it in my head, and maybe 'boo' at some actions that displease me (which is far less harmful imo), but that's about it.

I realize this is sports and way different than real life, but verbally abusing a twenty year old in other setting would have gotten that guy's *** kicked.

I bet you would have totally kept your mouth shut on this one, right?

Or maybe this one?

I bet you would have just stayed in your seat and been like, "Oh, lol, these youngsters and their games! Golly, sure is too bad we lost this athletic contest, but I'm glad that that young man is happy!"

Worst I'd have said would be 'sit down and shutup' or something along those lines.

All these situations are far different than the Smart one though. 'Pre-shove' he wasn't doing anything to antagonize the audience except play basketball in his bullish way.

Great story. And he should have been called out. Glad you did it.

Of cOurse Utah fans blasting a kid for going after someone calling him a racial slur. Utah fans are as classless as the texas tEch fans. holding up signs calling Fisher a liar and stuff. Birds ofa feather flock togther

Fisher did lie, but that's way in the past.

He got out of his contract because his daughter's doctor was in NY and he wanted to be closer. Then he signed in LA. You have an explanation for that? Do Utah fans have no right to feel slighted that he used his daughter's illness to get out of his contract in Utah so that he could sign with LA? Are there any small market fan bases that wouldn't hold at least a little bit of a grudge? And how does that make us classless and not Fisher? I don't follow.

Oh, and our opinions have been pretty mixed and last I heard the guy denied using a racial slur.

But continue to paint Utah as some sort of racist mecca. It shows you don't know anything about Utah. Do you honestly think Utah is more racist than your average state? More racist than your average southern state? Have you spent any time at all in Utah?

I agree, Utah fans are classless.

One time two colleges were playing some fall sport when suddenly, the wife and mother of a player were soaked in alcoholic beverages despite their religious beliefs against such beverages.

How classless!

The next year that player got his revenge doe.

Haha, you're so full of **** your eyes are brown.

All of these situations are the same in regards to fans going banana's and shouting/yelling/cursing at college players -- because in college ball, NBA ball, ward ball, pocket ball -- it doesn't matter, people get excited and heated about their teams. Also, were you at the game? Did you hear and/or see all of the stuff that went on at that game? What led to Smart being stupid? Oh, you didn't? So you have absolutely ZERO idea if he did anything to antagonize the audience?

Dude, just admit that you're a real basketball fan, just like that old bass turd, and that you would have said the same thing; maybe worse.

I never liked his game anyway. But this behavior is unacceptable. For the Jazz fans. I personally would kick my player's *** so individually that no one could get involved or break it, if he punched an elder in the crowd. I'd beat him so bad that he would quit if he would be a sissy, or straighten up and become a man, learn his mistakes if he has something in him.

***So essentially a middle-aged white booster was insulting a 19 year old black kid as his adrenaline was pumping during a basketball game... the kid gives a single shove without causing any obvious injury and didn't even knock the booster over ... and this constitutes that he is a bad seed and undraftable by an NBA team which is desperately in need of both talent and competitive fire from its bench.

Hmmm, I suppose this makes sense to some people, but not most.

I'm sure the Miller family agrees with this post.
