What's new

Alec has taken over as our alpha dog.

Who hates on Burks? I can't think of a single poster on Jazzfanz who fits this description.

Note how ugli, dala, and cyrone (3 of my favorite posters btw) have been absent from burks praise while he has been playing great ball.

Hell cyrone is still on the criticize tip.

I have argued with many posters many times this year (you included) about how good burks could be

This is fair but he tries hard on defense unlike melo, harden, curry, etc.

A better defensive coach and defensive system would probably help.

The effort is there

Honestly I don't see the effort in most games. He takes plays off, his help is translucent and off the ball he loses often track of his man. He closes out okay and 1v1 defense I don't like his stance and decision making.

I disagree with this but the rest of your post is ok.

I would ask you though if guys like curry, and harden give full effort on the defensive side each play? (Also i do see burks playing with effort each play on defense, but he does struggle with quite a few things defensively which is to be expected for a 22 year old getting his first taste of real playing time on a horrible defensive team with corbin for a coach)

Needs to work on his drive and dishing game if he ever wants to surpass being a scorer. Sometimes he isn't aware of how many people are collapsing on him and he tries a shot that is unnecessarily difficult when he could just kick it out.

Hardens 3rd year as a 22 year old averaged 4.2 assists per game per 36 on a very good offensive team.

Burks averages 3.5 per 36 in his 3rd year as a 22 year old on a team that is not as good offensively. (Worse supporting cast)

Not too bad

His defense does need to improve, but what game are you watching? I do see commitment and effort on defense from Burks.

Agree, but I see the other side of the arguement as well. Yes, his teamates screw things up, but he still needs to kick out and find his open teamates. As he does this he will elevate his play, and hopefully his teamates will get better making him even better. Hope this makes sense.

david locke just tweeted that over the last 10 games Burks gets to the FT line on 18% of his possessions. As compared to 16% for Harden and 15% for Durant.

That's an elite level.

Stoked posted this in locke podcast thread but I thought it should be in here

In last nights game I was keeping track of how many times alec touched the ball on offense versus how many shots he had taken.
At one point in the first half he had 16 touches and 2 shots (both makes).

I don't really know if that's good or bad cause I have never tracked other players that way but it seems like he should shoot more often

With all that said, I still don't mind him coming off the bench for now with the Jazz roster as it is. Just need to bring him in a bit earlier in the 1st and 3rd (6-7 minute mark), which would allow him to get a 2 minute rest later on and still play 32+ minutes per game.

YES!
Agree 100%. What Utah needs is a great defender to start and play 6 mins. Put him on the better wing player defensively. Then bring in Burks at the 6 min mark with Godron moving to SF. That allows Burks to bridge the gap between the starting and 2nd units. A decent coach should have no difficulty in getting Alec 32+ mins. Burks could even win 6th man award next year...if Corbin is replaced by an NBA-level HC.

I have already watched a full game solely focusing on Burks and writing it down play by play detailing his performance. Nowadays I see a 8 min summary usually and I see exactly what I've seen in that in depth when other teams score on him ;)

I also don't say that others play better defense or stuff. But James Harden has a 60% True Shooting, scores 10 points more per 100 possessions, hits 3s, doesn't go where the defense wants him to go, instead goes where wants through the middle and makes the defense collapse. Burks assists are created through misdirection plays, by doing a seemingly bad move, then with the help of the screener capitalizing on the defense doing what's predicted and finding the hole. Plus Harden plays 10 more mins, so fatigue is a bigger factor for him.
I don't know I just wanna see Burks playing consistent and playing smart and playing efficient. If he can do that for 1 season. Then I'm talking about throwing money at him. Right now he's between 4 and 6 annually at most. fringe starter. And he's fringe starter because quality of NBA shooting guards is so incredibly low. Quality reserve is what he would be on deeper positions like PG, SF.

Out of your ****ing mind in your valuation.
