I also hate Corbin's double-high post setup because I can't figure out wtf he's trying to do with Favors taking the entry pass so far away from the elbow. He can't score from there and they aren't getting good passes. Does anyone have a clue?

He's trying to make Favors' be Kanter so he doesn't have to play Kanter.

The defense is both a system problem and a personnel problem. I wouldn't call a team with Favors, Marv, and Hayward as destined for a bottom 5 defense year in/year out. People like Zach Lowe have already pointed out Corbin's perplexing defensive systems.

The only *perplexing* part I've seen Lowe point out was trying to flash the pnr with Favors. What was so wrong with finding out whether or not Favors could defend the pnr by flashing? It's a common scheme and has its place in basketball (like when they re-screen toward the middle). It's superior to dumping down if you can contain. They tried, it didn't work, Corbin changed things up.

Anyway, you may be right that it is a system problem but I can't tell either way and no one in the organization will answer my questions. I guess I have to get tickets next to Old Jerry and bother the hell out of him in person.

I wish I could pick DL's mind on the defensive end. I can't tell if Ty can't get these guys to play or if the players just aren't smart enough to defend well. Last I heard DL on the radio he indicated the latter by saying it's his job to go out and get players who are willing to defend. It seemed like an indictment of the current group more than the system.

I remeber this interview. It was in defense of Kanter and all the hate he was catching on the defense. The way I interpreted it was that he knows Kanter isn't fast, or a shot blocker, but that he's ok with that because he is high in the other things Kanter can do, and therefore needs the team constructed defensively in a way that is less porous. Right now, hayward is the only perimeter player who can somewhat contain his man, but even then Hayward doesn't always rotate to help others, or will sluff off of shooters and follow the ball.

Don't think it means we're getting rid of Trey, but rather that he expects more hip riding and breaking through screens from him.

RJ is the guy we are obviously getting rid of, and even though RJ knows what to do, he just doesn't or can't anymore.

If Marvin stays around next year, I hope he is repositioned back to the 3 for our defenses sake.

As is, the porous perimeter is putting too much pressure on our bigs, even Favors.

Because Ty doesn't seem to understand who his players are. It's the same thing with the whole Hayward point forward mess(he just doesn't have the handles). Kanter well I don't know what the hell is going on there, but it would be tough to say that Corbin has gotten the most out of him.

I don't know how Corbin can fix that, but at this point I'd like to see them dedicate to staying home like Frank Vogel does. If teams tear up the paint then so be it. The results couldn't be any worse.

I agree with both your points. Staying home (when the other player doesn't really need your help), and with picking up a new man when you're burned badly. A lot of times when players rotate to a new man after being burned, and if the big rotates to the leaker, and someone grabs the big's man, the offense will reset, which allows the defense to reset.

Hopefully with an offseason of training with real teainers (trey used his dad's friends before draft), Trey will have some more speed to prevent some of his leaks, which will hopefully lead to Hayward not leaving his man in the corner. RJ won't be here next year, and since Alec has shown some flashes of really good D because of his quickness and willingness to ride opponent's hip (some possessions he takes off still), the perimeter could be more sealed than it is now. Marvin at the 3, as we've already discussed could also do this.

It sounds like we're on the same page--good team/interior defense must first start with good perimeter defense.

Here is the thing about coaches, a lot of them really suck for a few years, and then they get better. Sloan was fired from his job in Chicago, and had a losing record as a head coach before coming to the Jazz as an assistant. Pop didn't just become an elite coach the year he started, and when he was considered a great coach, he had two hall of famers on his roster.

Corbin might become a great coach, or he might not ever be better than a second round playoff exit. He is not Phil Jackson, but he sure as hell is no Isaiah Thomas.

Agreed.

If we are in the business of developing our players, it's kind of hard to be in the business of developing your coach as well.

As for who? I'd say Thib's, but with the Carmello rumor he might not be as willing to go as I previously thought.

We missed out on Hornacek, but we're all talking out of our asses if we say we knew he would be this good this quick.

Lionel Hollins and George Karl are w/o jobs. Of the the 2, I'd probably prefer Karl because of the tempo he plays his teams at would be epic for our young guys (maybe not Trey). Our bigs can run, they just don't consistently for some reason.

Hollins is a good coach but is also pretty stubborn and vet dependent, which wouldn't be good for our team.

SVG doesn't like Hayward, but he loves Enes and Derrick...

DL is going to have a very busy offseason with draft, free agency, coaching contracts, and contracts for hayward, burks, and enes.
